Last week marked the first brachytherapy radiation treatment with high dose-rate (HDR) technique for gynecological cancer here by Dr. Lucas Sapienza and the dedicated medical physics team at UF Health Proton Therapy Institute and UF Health Jacksonville.

We are the only academic oncology facility between Orlando and Atlanta to offer this wide range of radiation technologies for the treatment of gynecological cancer – Proton therapy with Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS), photon radiation (IMRT) and now brachytherapy with HDR. Congratulations to the team who worked hard to make this treatment option a reality right here at our center. Find out more about us: https://bit.ly/48gKrw7

On World Pancreatic Cancer Day, we honor the people affected by pancreatic cancer and their families.

Physicians at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute are using proton therapy to treat both operable and inoperable pancreatic cancers in an effort to improve the cure rate for this difficult disease. They have already proven the advantages over conventional radiation therapy in terms of radiation dose distribution and demonstrated minimal side effects with proton therapy.

This past week, Grey’s Anatomy star, James Pickens, Jr., shared his prostate cancer diagnosis - and used his platform to encourage men to get screened and understand their treatment options.

At UF Health Proton Therapy Institute, we see every day how early detection can save lives. Prostate cancer is highly treatable, especially when found early. Regular screening, including PSA tests and conversations with your healthcare provider, is an important step for all men. Many men choose proton therapy for the reduced side effects compared to other treatments. Whichever treatment you choose, knowing your options is important.

Detecting lung cancer early on is critical, as it provides more treatment options and improved treatment results. Proton therapy is ideal for lung tumors that have not spread outside of the chest and is able to reduce the amount of radiation to the healthy lung.

Choosing UF Health Proton Therapy Institute:

According to the Szykowny family, the decision came down to the way they were welcomed at the Institute, the way Dr. Mendenhall and other staff members put them at ease, as well as the cancer treatment plan, including fewer treatments and the research that showed there would be fewer side effects from proton therapy.

The UF Health Proton Therapy Institute experts are working to improve outcomes for people affected by pancreatic cancer. Our research into the use of proton radiation in place of x-ray radiation has allowed us to successfully reduce the toxicity to the small bowel from 47% to only 15%, meaning fewer side effects for patients. We’re also advancing the use of radiation before surgery when appropriate, which is an approach that’s helping patients live longer.
