Avoiding re**al side effects is a key benefit to using proton therapy for prostate cancer treatment. To aid personalized treatment selection, our experts developed a predictive model for acute re**al toxicity in patients with prostate cancer undergoing radiotherapy with photons (X-ray radiation) and protons. In the proton cohort of the study, protons achieved 100% sensitivity and specificity, compared to only 83% sensitivity in the X-ray radiation group.

*UF Expert Highlighted in the 50 Years of Radiation Science edition of the Red Journal*

During Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month, our GYN expert, Dr. Lucas Sapienza shares his latest research and goal of improving outcomes for cancer patients: “Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy) is a major component of the management of multiple types of cancers, especially gynecological cancers. The understanding of its complications (such as urinary organs damage) and developments in image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) are the pathway to improve currently available techniques and patients outcomes.”
