✨ Top 5 Tips to Reduce Tearing at Birth ✨
A new study just showed (what we doulas have known all along) that a “hands-off” birth approach — meaning no manual stretching or perineal support during pushing — is linked to a lower risk of tearing. 🙌 (NCBI)
Here are five evidence-based ways to help protect your perineum:
1. Hands-off during pushing – Let your body stretch naturally; new research shows this greatly reduces tearing. And as a doula of 14 years I can say it’s 100% truth!
2. Water therapy - Tub, shower, Warm compresses – Applying moist warmth during crowning helps tissues stay flexible.
3. Perineal massage in late pregnancy – Gentle prep from 36+ weeks can improve elasticity, but if it’s not your vibe, have your provider pour some mineral oil on you as baby is crowning.
4. Upright or side-lying positions – Gravity and alignment work in your favor, keeping weight off the perineum.
5. Breathe your baby out – Slow, controlled pushing, using your abdominal muscles, gives tissues time to stretch.
Every birth is unique, but small choices can make a big difference. 💛 Save this and share it with a friend who needs the low-down!
