At Bouncing Beans Pediatric Therapy, we celebrate all forms of communication!
This past Friday, we had a blast using TD Snap during a session to help a child request, label, and identify parts of Mr. Potato Head. This amazing communicator used a combination of gestures, spoken words, and AAC to express themselves—and we were here for it!

Most children say their first word around 12 months old. How can you tell your child’s first word from other sounds that they make?

A word is when a child uses sounds consistently and meaningfully, they may not sound exactly like adult words :) It is common for children to use “word approximations.” Word approximations are still technically words! We honor all types of word approximations, environmental/animal sounds, gesture use, babbling, etc at Bouncing Beans Pediatric Therapy.

If your child is very quiet, doesn’t babble, or hasn’t said a first word by 15 months old, consider getting a speech-language evaluation today!

Looking for ways to help your child communicate? Try some of the following ideas:

-Place items out of reach. This encourages child to use you for help, such as pointing, bringing you to the item, gesturing, or using verbal approximations!

-Using hard to open containers. You can model “open” paired with tapping the box - see if your child with imitate the action.

-Offering things bit by bit such as blocks, legos, Mr. Potato Head. Your child can sign “more”, make choices through pointing or eye gaze while you model language.

-Providing choices such as which pajamas the child wants to wear, cheez-its or goldfish as a snack, blocks, shoe choices.

DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE TWO WAYS KIDDOS LEARN LANGUAGE?

Does your child learn language in chunks or phrases? Do they repeat shows, songs, or known phrases? This is called Gestalt Language Processing, and it is how many children with autism learn language!

Does your child learn language by using single words? Do they build their single words to 2&3 word phrases? Do their words carry meaning and you know what they want? This is called Analytic Language Processing, and it is most widely known as the “typical” way to develop language.

Knowing the difference between GLP and ALP has completely changed my outlook on intervention.
