When Ashley arrived at Gateway, her addiction had taken nearly everything from her. Unhoused after 81 days in jail and three months pregnant, the court offered her treatment at Gateway in lieu of conviction. Ashley arrived at Gateway lost and scared with only the clothes on her back.
Ashley participated in the LSFHealthSystems Pregnant and Postpartum Women (PPW) program while in treatment. Thanks to LSF’s support, she received case management, medical services, and supervised room and board. As a result, she realized she could keep her baby and raise it in a stable environment. “Gateway provided me with everything I needed,” Ashley says. “I realized I could give my baby a better life than I had.”
Ashley worked Gateway’s recovery program with incredible dedication and commitment. Today, she is 13 months clean and sober. She works two jobs, one of which involves supporting pre- and post-incarcerated women. She leads multiple recovery support groups at Gateway, showing other women how she recovered, teaching life skills, and offering unparalleled support and guidance. As someone who has been through the depths of addiction, Ashley is uniquely qualified to help other Gateway patients on their recovery journeys. And her 6-month-old daughter, Oakley, is happy and healthy. She attends Gateway’s Kids’ Success Center during the day and lives with her mom at Gateway’s LSF-funded transitional housing.
“There was a time when my family never talked to me, but now I talk to them for hours every day,” Ashley says. “I love it here [at Gateway]. And I love being able to give back what was so freely given to me.”
