One of the most important ways to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 is to remain at home and minimize physical proximity. This, however, has led to an increased use of digital devices and screen time for both work and recreation, which may lead to an increase in eye strain or other ocular comp...

Federal enforcement action: Based on a finding by the FDA, Visibly's (formerly known as Opternative) online vision test has been recalled and is no longer available.

As you may have recently heard, after years of steadfast advocacy and education by the AOA, our affiliates and member doctors of optometry about the potential health risks of existing online vision tests, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of Visibly (formerly known as Opternative), and the withdrawal of the test from the market..

This is a decided victory for our patients and public health at large. However, the fight is not over. The AOA will continue to work with federal agencies, Congress and the patient advocacy community to ensure that similar products on the market are also held fully accountable. We will continue to support the highest standard of eye health and vision care and to further strengthen the doctor-patient relationship.

Today, the AOA is issuing a Public Health Advisory, alerting patients to the recall of the Visibly test, and the potential health risks posed by the remaining online vision tests on the market. We will also reinforce the importance of an in-person, comprehensive eye exam with an AOA doctor of optometry.

Online eye tests cannot effectively detect any of 12 things an eye doctor examines in person. Comprehensive eye exams can diagnose diabetes and high blood pr...

More Teens Need Prescription Glasses. Is Excessive Screen Time to Blame?

Experts say smaller screens and an increase in usage is causing a number of eyesight problems for children and young adults.

Ever since I was 30 years old my eyes had days where they felt SO tired and DRY! I thought it was because I was getting lousy sleep so I would close my eyes just to get some relief. Currently I wear blue light blocking glasses JUST so when I walk around the office at work I don't have the "wind" drying my eyes out. The glasses also help when I look at my TV/Computer so that I don't feel fatigued.

Fast forward to a couple of years when I realized I had a disease, MGD. "Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is blockage or some other abnormality of the meibomian glands so they don't secrete enough oil into the tears. Because the tear film on the surface of the eye then evaporates too quickly, MGD is associated with dry eye syndrome"

Basically my body wasn't producing enough OIL to keep my tears IN my eyes! Ever have days where your eyes just start running with water? That's not supposed to happen. It's because you don't have enough oil on your eye to KEEP those tears in place. How do you help prevent MGD? BLINKING! I have starred a lot at a computer screen in my life and probably have forgotten to BLINK. Every time you BLINK the act of "squeezing" releases the oil from your meibomian glands. If you don't blink enough the oil starts to get clogged. Think of it like a twisted garden hose, if you don't untangle the kink it's not going to work. After a while *if* those glands don't get UNCLOGGED---they die off. And you NEVER get them back!

This is why I don't let my daughter play on the Tablet too much and when she does I instruct, "BLINK BREAK!"

We recently got two new toys at my office. The LipiScan and the LipiFlow. The LipiScan actually takes photos of what your meibomian glands look like (to see if it's the cause of a patients dry eyes or not) and the LipiFlow which is the TREATMENT for MGD. I was the first one in the office to try it out. What does it feel like? I equate it with have a "Spa Day" for your eyes. It feels like a warm washcloth is laying over your eyes while someone's fingers are gently rolling back and forth to lightly massage them. The warmth melts the oil in the glands (think of it like trying to melt solid Crisco) and the massaging encourages them to release the clogged up oil.

Already this morning my eyes feel a lot BETTER than they normally do. I don't even NOTICE the dryness (which is something I am aware of nearly 70% of the day)
