Yes! 🙌 there is no “right way” to hold your baby when nursing. Whatever is most comfortable for you and baby is the “right way”
There is no magic right feeding position. The best position is the one that works for you.
“You’re going to love the football hold.”
I did not love the football hold.
The midwife helping me latch my baby was lovely and obviously knowledgeable.
My baby had difficulty keeping my ni**le in her mouth and my midwife was helping us try to get comfortqble and get my baby to have a full deed. She was knowledgable and confident that the football hold was the answer and I would love it.
But I did not love the football hold. (Rugby hold elsewhere).
I felt awkward and uncomfortable, weirdly detached from my baby and somehow removed from the experience. Her latch still hurt and though she could hold on better in the football hold, she still didn’t have a full feed.
There was a lot going on that made feeding difficult for my second born (tongue tie, reflux, and dairy intolerance in my milk) and while the football hold seemed to help some, I never did like it.
I also didn’t really like the laid back position, sometimes called the biological feeding position. The darling hold of some IBCLCs, there’s a lot that is great about the laid back position and as a lactation educator, I teach these benefits in my classes and with my breastfeeding coaching clients. But I never really loved it for myself.
I’m more a classic cradle hold or classic cradle hold with modifications.
Or sit weird hold because I always sit weird.
There are a number of holds with different perks and benefits or for different situations and challenges.
There is no magic right feeding position. The best position is the one that works for you and your baby.
If you do something different, you’re not doing it wrong. If you’re comfortable, your baby is comfortable, and milk is transferred, it’s the right position for you.
