Hi everyone! My name is Shauntrell and I’m serving as a maternal health care coordinator at UF Health Jacksonville. Serving as a maternal health care coordinator has allowed me to make a positive impact in the community while also developing meaningful relationships with community members. One of my favorite parts of my host site position is getting to do outreach in the community! Safe Futures is one of the organizations that we frequently partner with. I am able to assist with diaper giveaways and food drives while also providing community resources to pregnant and parenting families.

NHC not only serves the health and well-being of communities around the US, but it also strengthens communities through members completing a wide array of outside service activities in the community. As my NHC service term approaches the end, I’m thankful for the many opportunities not only to serve the patients at my host site, but also reach out into the community outside of the sphere of healthcare. Some of my favorite service opportunities this year have been helping prepare a house with HabiJax (pictured) and helping teach a citizenship class with Catholic Charities!

Hi! My name is Madison and I’m a Patient Navigator at UF Health’s Urban Health Alliance. One of my main roles involves providing educational cooking classes at our Food Pharmacy for patients who are diagnosed with chronic diabetes and/or hypertension. These classes are fun and interactive, and ~serve~ to provide patients with healthy (yet still delicious) meal options to aid in bettering their overall health and wellbeing!

Hi everyone! My name is Beth Anne, and I’m a youth care coordinator at JASMYN in Jacksonville, FL. When I’m not serving at my host site, one of my favorite things to do is get a cold brew coffee and go on a walk by the St. Johns River. The weather is perfect right now! I also have a 17-year-old cat, Tom, who can sleep through anything! After I leave Jacksonville in July, I’ll be moving to North Carolina to pursue my Master’s in Library Sciences from UNC Chapel Hill. I’m sad that the end of my term is only a few months away, but I’ve had such a great time being a member of NHC!

Hey, what's good everyone! My name is Rehan Subramanyam and I currently serve at the Sulzbacher Center for Homelessness in the Dental Clinic as a Patient Navigator! Everyday, I meet with individuals who are either homeless or are below the 200% Federal Poverty Guidelines and verify their eligibility at our dental clinic. I have learned a lot about the various social determinants of health that my patients face and struggle with in order to receive dental and oral care in the community. I wholly believe in making healthcare both accessible and affordable, and my experience with NHC in Jacksonville has allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and learn about this through my interactions with different patients.

Hi everyone, I’m Mason and I serve at Sulzbacher Beaches Clinic. I assist patients with enrolling in PAP (Patient Assistance Programs) and it has been an eye-opening experience regarding the cost of medication for those without insurance. Commonly prescribed medications for patients with particular medical diagnoses can range between several hundred to even the thousands of dollars when paying full retail price. It has become evident how being a patient advocate to the particular population we serve, which tends to have lower levels of health literacy and access to health resources, can impact this patient population’s ability to receive medically necessary drugs, which subsequently affects their health outcomes.

What a beautiful day to enjoy lunch outside! 🏝️☀️
One of the great things about serving at similar locations is the ability to collaborate! Our Florida members often work with one another to offer the best possible care to the population. Although we may have different position descriptions, here in Florida, we believe teamwork makes the dreamwork! 🙌🏼

One of the things that I love the most about being a part of NHC is that it connects us with local volunteering opportunities that I previously would never have been aware of. An opportunity that several of my fellow members and I have been taking part in is volunteering at weekly citizenship classes. In these classes, we help prospective American citizens prepare for their upcoming citizenship exams as well as help them practice their English. Being able to help immigrants gain American citizenship is something that is especially meaningful to me as it is the same process that my parents went through when they immigrated here in search of a better life and the American dream.

Hi, I’m Madison and serve as Patient Navigator at UF Health Urban Health Alliance. Last MTD, as part of our training day, our NHC FL team went kayaking in Amelia Island as a team building exercise. Everyone had a blast and learned more about working together as a team to achieve the common goal of… making it to the sandbar and back! We make the most out of these opportunities by opening up space for important conservations and situations that we work through at our host sites. It is important to engage in conversation and challenge ourselves to grow and think about new perspectives, but it is also equally important to prioritize wellness so that we may consistently strive to be the best versions of ourselves in order to best serve our community! Happy MTD, NHC 123!
