Expediting recovery from

Things have taken a dramatic turn for the worse: originally diagnosed as a line fracture, this has now been diagnosed as a comminuted fracture of the lateral tibial plateau.

Here’s how to read an x-ray at least in general terms. The L designate that it’s the left leg. this is an interior view, meaning it’s shot from the front. The femur is the top bone, the long bone of the thigh. The tibia is the bone below it, the shin bone. The small bone to the right is the fibula. These are the three bones which articulate the new along with the patella, or the kneecap, which you can’t see.

The trick with x-rays is to realize that you have to flip the image in your mind. Just as when you’re looking at a person from the front: their right is your left and their left is your right.

In the same way, the right side of the leg which is towards the midline of the body is on the left and the left side of the leg which is on the outside is to the right. The correct terminology for this would be medial for the midline and lateral for the outside line.

You can see where the tibia bone is very light and there’s a lot of joint space on the medial side just above the fibula.

They say they are going to reconstitute the missing bone. You can only see that there’s a huge gap from a CT scan but I don’t have a copy of that at the moment. They want to do surgery immediately.

So I’m going in on Friday, tomorrow, April 14. Wish me luck!

Why this happened is a longer conversation.

Suffice it to say that after a good three or four years of serious grief, I suffered from premature aging, and diminished blood flow to the lower extremities. I believe that’s why the upper bone was strong and hard enough to cause damage to the lower bone. There was a difference in bone density due to the lack of good circulation to the shin. And so the impact of the fall drove The femur straight down into the tibia with such force that it crushed crushed the bone and must be surgically reconstituted.

One moral of the story is: never let yourself mourn for so long that your health declines. But that is easier said than done with certain losses. Without feldenkrais I could not have come back to be stronger than I was before. But it does not make a person regain bone density. I didn’t realize it was an issue, or I would’ve addressed it. Only in retrospect is it somewhat obvious. This is why I am so passionate about helping people come out of the Dark Night of the Soul caused by years of grief and why I think that feldenkrais is immensely helpful for this. But that too is a longer conversation! I must rest now.
