Lady Client: I should've shaved my legs. I'm sorry.

Me: Why? The guys never apologize for that....

Lady Client: 🤔🤔🤔

Y'all, I don't care if you have hair. I care if you're clean, respectful, and punctual. Please never apologize about your body.

Let's talk about sleep and what you can do to improve your quality of sleep.

Oftentimes, I hear two common statements among clients regarding sleep. 1) I think I slept wrong and now my _______ hurts. 2) I'm so exhausted because I'm dealing with insomnia.

In regards to sleeping wrong or feeling battered after a night's sleep.... I always ask, "how many pillows to do you sleep with?". To which many clients reply "I sleep with one pillow". STOP THAT! Unless your doctor has told you specifically to sleep with one or none, you should be sleeping with 3 to 5 pillows.

"But Joan, that seems excessive."

No, it is not! When you sleep, you need to think about supporting your joints. Especially your spine. Side sleepers should be especially diligent in this case. Use pillows to support your joints at the neck, chest, knees, ankles and back. If you have always slept with one pillow, there will be a learning curve here and some annoyance. Lol. Keep at it because eventually your sleep quality will improve.

Look out for my next post regarding insomnia. Until then, sleep well 🙏

Let's learn about ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is inflammation in one or more joints. Joint pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, and decreased range of motion are common symptoms of arthritis.

Currently, there are over 100 types of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteo-arthritis are the most common types of arthritis. Less common types include lupus, gout, and fibromyalgia.

Arthritis can be caused by the natural wear and tear of just being alive. Conversely, it can be experienced as an autoimmune disorder in which the body itself attacks the joints There is no cure for arthritis.

Clients experiencing a flare or who have hot, swollen, and inflamed joints should NOT get a massage. Symptoms of arthritis may worsen with massage in this phase. Rest, hydration, and hydrotherapies are indicated. Generally, deep tissue massages are not recommended for arthritis. Relaxation style massages as well as Lymphatic Drainage are recommended for those suffering with arthritis.

How do you get up when the massage is over?

You may feel a little drowsy. Take a few moments to
-breathe deeply
-move/shake your legs & arms around
-sit up and feel your body
-allow circulation and consciousness to return to equilibrium.... then you can safely and slowly get off the table.

The session may be over but not to worry. You can book again 😊

Health Literacy 101: Deciding when to get a massage is generally straight forward. A strange neck ache from poor sleep, back pain from sitting long hours, or feelings of stress and agitation are just a few good reasons to visit your therapist.

Here are a few reasons when massage is contraindicated:

- If you are experiencing pain levels that can be characterized as extreme or disruptive to your lifestyle...

- If you have a fever...

- If you have a medical condition that is in a "flare up" phase....

- If you have consumed alcohol within 2 hours of your appointment...

- If you have had surgery within the past 6 weeks...

- If you are in the first trimester of pregnancy

In situations like these, more rest, consulting a physician, or rescheduling may be a more practical choice over treatment.

Health Literacy 101: Identifying your pain can better help you and your massage therapist come up with a treatment plan. Pain is complex. Everyone experiences pain differently. Pain in the massage community has expanded to include factors such as mental health, cultural influences, socioeconomic circumstances, spirituality, and generational curses.

The three major types of pain are:

Nerve Pain: pain caused by trauma or damage to nerves. Nerve pain is typically experienced as burning, itching, stinging, stabbing, tingling, or electric sensations

Somatic Pain: pain caused by trauma or damage to soft tissues such as bone, muscle, and skin. Somatic pain is localized, constant and stimulated by movement. Somatic pain can be superficial or deep. It can be experienced as cramps, soreness, sharp, or aching.

Visceral Pain: pain caused by trauma or damage to internal organs. Visceral pain can be felt in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It is experienced often as dull, hard to pinpoint, and more spread out.
