When your dog is standing square on a flat surface, their nails should not be engaged and you should be able to slide a credit card under your dog’s nails and the floor. Long nails impact posture causing undue stress of ligaments, joints, and muscles. Not only is it uncomfortable and leads to poor traction in our senior dogs, but it predisposes young animals to develop arthritis.
It’s imperative to consistently handle your dog’s feet starting at a young age and for them learn a positive association with the nail clippers/dremel. This is one of many reasons why I send all my puppy clients to Polite Pooches: to teach the owners to be comfortable with this, but also to learn to communicate and understand their dogs better.

Finicky eaters like Rudy are rarely just being particular about what they want to eat, but instead have underlying GI issues. Rudy was always up for a treat, but was frequently skipping his kibble in the AM, making gurlgy stomach noises, burping, and having intermittently softer stool. After switching to a tailored fresh food diet, balancing out his pattern with Chinese herbals, and doing a few spinal manipulations, Rudy’s clinical signs subsided quickly. It’s wonderful when people seek integrative care out early in the disease process as many times we can stop and even reverse inflammatory damage of the gut before we have full blown IBD or pancreatitis.

Frances was rescued as a kitten and she arrived with horrid diarrhea. She went through a slew of probiotics, prophylactic deworming, metronidazole, prescription GI diets to no avail. Since incorporating chinese herbals to drain her dampness and booster the gut immune system, her fluffy butt is no longer smearing p**p on surfaces, and the owners are scooping solid stool out of the litterbox.

Who doesn’t love a senior beagle?? Rosy has severe neck arthritis that causes pain and wobbly legs, to the point of falling over. In addition, she has renal issues.
Integrative care has kept her kidney numbers stable, and allowed her body to heal without the need for western meds. Two years later she still makes her daily rounds patrolling the garden, and plays with her siblings

Kira had a great workup with her GP vet at JVH, and was diagnosed with a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) cancer in her urinary bladder back in July, 2024. The mass was taking up 75% of her bladder space and she developed significant anemia and lethargy from the vast amount of blood loss in her urine. Herbal therapies like Yunnan Bai Yao has been instrumental in getting her bleeding in check. Other chinese herbal formulas that she's on help clear inflammation, reduces bacterial growth, has antineoplastic properties, etc. Kira is a good example of how well animals with advanced cancer can do with palliative integrative care. , Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital

I found a melanoma in the back of Eddie's mouth on a routine wellness exam. Unfortunately it was in a bad location and so large that the dental surgeon said it was too risky to operate. Mom elected integrative care and we kept him happy and comfortable for almost 10 more months after diagnosis. RIP, sweet boy.

Molly was only a 6month puppy when I first met her. She had already been on 5 rounds of antibiotics for persistent UTI’s and incontinence and was having loose stool from all the meds. She’s since been weaned off all of her western meds and has been maintained with acupuncture, spinal manipulation, herbals, and food therapy for the last 6months without a recurrence. Today we celebrate 13 months since Rocket’s osteosarcoma diagnosis, and he’s still going strong! Other than amputation, this ham has been managed holistically and maintaining a great quality of life. Shoutout to Dr. Marsden and Dr. Bannink who has done extensive research on OSA using integrative medicine and for sharing this knowledge.
