My Tribute to Dr. Jerry A. Shields & a Shot in the Arm from a global giant in Ocular Oncology.

His recent passing brings back memories of a defining moment in my life, 30 years ago.
Having just arrived in the United States from India (then still labeled a “Third World country,” not yet celebrated for the high IQ minds in medicine and technology it’s known for today), I had already authored a textbook, published scientific papers, and invented surgical instruments while still a junior resident.

With the same resilience and clarity of purpose that continues to guide me, I traveled to the in Philadelphia and insisted on meeting no one less than the world’s foremost authority in eye tumors - Dr. Shields, to personally hand him my textbook: “ .”

His staff informed him, and within minutes, he stepped out with grace and warmth, flipped through the book, and said something I will never forget:
“You may be the first in the World to have done this.”

That moment became one of the many silent shots in the arm that have fueled my journey - built not on shortcuts or endorsements, but on purpose and conviction.

As many stalwarts in the world of eye surgery mourn his passing, I continue to carry forward that spirit of encouraging and inspiring all levels of eye surgeons who visit our Institute.

🙏 Thank you, Dr. Shields — for your legacy, your humility, and for seeing potential in someone the world didn’t yet know.
