Our patient Shawna was in for her post-op appointment with the team last week, and she posed for a quick pic with Dr. G, Carson and Lindsey before returning home. Shawna shared:

"I am excited to see the results of my second LVA surgery as the weeks go by. I’ve had so much improvement since the first and am hopeful this second surgery will yield the same amount of relief. I’ll always be grateful for Dr. Granzow and his team!"

We look forward to hearing about your continued good healing, Shawna. Thanks for sharing with our followers.

In fall 2024, Dr. Granzow and team published a research article titled, "The Current State of Lymphedema Surgery". As we continue to collect data for future articles Dr. G plans to publish this year utilizing valuable surgical data, we thought it worth sharing the '24 article again. Here's the abstract to whet your appetite:

Lymphedema surgeries have been proven effective in treating lymphedema and are not considered experimental or unproven. The medical literature consistently supports the safe and successful use of physiologic drainage lymphedema surgeries such as lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA), vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT), and reductive surgeries such as suction-assisted protein lipectomy (SAPL) when performed by an experienced lymphedema surgery team to treat properly selected patients. Proper integration of lymphedema therapy is critical to achieving successful outcomes. We review effective lymphedema surgeries, their indications, patient selection, and the proper application of surgical treatments to achieve optimal results.

The article can be found online in Lymphatics, which is an international peer-reviewed journal on lymphatics and related disorders published quarterly by MDPI. MDPI is the large publisher of open-access scientific journals.

We love receiving videos from our patients! Here's one from Heather, who enjoyed a ski trip with her family just a few weeks ago. The exhilaration in her husband's voice and her special greeting to the team says it all.

"I wanted to share this video with you guys and thank you again for being amazing!!

Kevin and I and our kids and grandkids (11 of us in total!) all headed to Maine to ski in the new year together! It was so much fun and I felt deep joy in my soul that I was not held back because of lymphedema! I felt amazing skiing and as you can tell from Kevin’s voice on the video he was so proud and excited for me!! You all gave me this moment and I will forever be grateful for all of you!"
(I’m in the pink jacket)

Thank you is not enough!
♥️Heather and the rest of her family

Heather, we loved seeing you as a snow queen with your supportive family by your side. Here's to more winter ski vacations in your future.

The most recent Klose training course hosted here in Jacksonville had a whopping 20 registrants and graduation was on Tuesday. Lindsey assisted us in capturing participants of the Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Certification class and gave us this description of the subject matter.

Students were working on the posterior upper quadrant of the trunk and posterior interaxillary anastomosis when they had me come in to take photos. Decongesting the trunk is important prior to decongesting the extremities. It is an important aspect of MLD and where you redirect the lymphatic fluid from affected to non-affected regional lymph nodes. Patients with upper extremity lymphedema often experience swelling in the affected upper truncal quadrant and it is an important area to treat during therapy.

Thanks to the instructors Joanne and Guenter for allowing us to take a closer look at this latest course that made it possible for these therapists to become certified in MLD. We hope some of them will be at facilities near you!

This video was born out of a collaborative effort between Dr. Granzow, Bianca and Carson to share lymphedema surgery tips and techniques with our followers, who wouldn't normally have the opportunity to see the inside of an operating room. As you might imagine, many details are important in making each lymphedema surgery successful.

Here, Dr. G highlights the importance of vein valves in selecting the best veins for his LVA connections.

We hope to share more of these types of videos with you in the future.

The Klose Training folks are back in Jacksonville! The students participating in their Lymphedema therapy certification course graduated yesterday. Today a new course on Manual Lymphatic Drainage begins.

The group photo includes Dr. Granzow, Guenter Klose and instructor Joanne McGillicuddy with her proud graduates. Our other photo shows Guenter and Dr. G posing for a photo in our office lobby after Dr. G spoke to students.

Thanks for encouraging more therapists to obtain certification to treat more lymphedema patients deserving of the best care!

We last saw our patient Amy in a great pic while sightseeing in Ireland. This time she's standing with Team Granzow after her recent surgery. We asked how she was feeling just a week after her LVA bypass:

"I was born with lymphedema. I learned to manage the disease the best I could and never expected improvement or thought it was possible. Many suffer with lymphedema and have little support and/or minimal access to resources; that has not been the case for me. I have so much to be grateful for! Dr. Granzow and his incredible team performed SAPL on my right leg in July, and LVA on my left leg last week. I have experienced IMPROVEMENT in both legs! What a gift!"

Life keeps improving for our patients and we love being part of their medical journey, Pictured: Marcy, Dr. G, Amy and Sam.

As noted in our earlier post this week, Dr. Granzow has been on the west coast attending the ASRM conference near San Diego. He sent us a couple more photos we wanted to share with you.

Among the advantages of attending these conferences is being able to check out new advances in the field, which Dr G is doing here as he tries out the newest Mitaka surgical microscope. The other photo shows a couple of well-known lymphedema surgeons enjoying a reunion and dinner. That's Dr. Dayan from New Jersey on the left.

We're looking forward to having Dr. Granzow back in Jacksonville to share what he learned this week to improve your care.

Dr. Granzow has been in Chula Vista, CA since the weekend, attending the annual meeting of the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM). As you know, Dr. G attends and speaks at a variety of conferences each year. This time, he connected with colleague and former microsurgery fellow Dr. Josh Levine who he met in New Orleans when they were both Fellows for Dr. Robert Allen, Sr., a well-known reconstructive microsurgeon.

We were excited to see the other photo with Dr. Granzow pictured among several medical student attendees who are doing lymphedema research. We can only hope for more med students taking an interest in pursuing and advancing lymphedema surgery and research!

We expect to share a couple more conference photos with you before Dr. G heads back to Jacksonville.
