Last month, we held a Robotics Day in partnership with Providence School's robotics program. Students were able to learn about robotic technology, how it helps patients recover faster, and test-drive our robot under the guidance of robotic surgeon, Dr. Husain Abbas. Many questions were asked to help them decide whether this would be a field they intend to pursue as a career. More than 25 students, accompanied by their teacher, Robert Holcomb, spent a few hours at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital furthering their understanding of robotic technology and left inspired to be our next generation of robotic surgeons and engineers.

This Black History Month we celebrate Jessica McGlocking, PCT lead on 4 Central and Marticia Washington, RN, also on 4 Central. Both ladies share how much they enjoy showing up for our hospital, our patients and our community.

Jessica shares: I can honestly say this is a great place to work at HCA Florida Memorial because of the nursing teams and especially my co-workers on my floor. I love what I do because everyone is close like family - and we all enjoy giving back.

Marticia shared: I like helping people in general, and I particularly like helping people who have had bad experiences (medically). I try to change it around for them and when I do see that change, it is very gratifying.

We salute you both and look forward to your continued excellence in action as healthcare professionals!

02/14/2025

❤ This Valentine’s Day and National Donor Day, we’re sharing the story of a heart transplant that offered HCA Healthcare patient Danny Tucker a new lease on life and love. Through Danny’s journey of seeking lifesaving heart care, he found a lifelong partner in HCA Florida Healthcare nurse Marisa Thompson.

At 21 years old, Danny began experiencing severe chest pain and sought emergency medical attention. His medical team discovered Danny was facing complete organ failure. Marisa, a family friend of Danny’s and an HCA Florida Trinity Hospital nurse, was looped into Tucker’s health situation and immediately became an advocate for hope and a strong proponent for seeking a second opinion. Her research and knowledge of HCA Healthcare’s collaborative network of expert care led her to HCA Florida Largo Hospital’s Advanced Heart Failure Center, where Danny was quickly accepted as a patient. The team immediately began to explore his treatment options.

Once admitted, Danny’s heart failure team recommended a wearable cardiac defibrillator as a precautionary measure should he suddenly go into cardiac arrest. He also received a portable IV pump and infusion to help his heart pump stronger, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This would ultimately serve as the bridge to his heart transplant. Marisa was there every step of the way. Soon after discharge, Danny asked Marisa to a lunch date to thank her and their love story began.

Danny was on the heart transplant waiting list for less than three months before receiving his new heart in 2022 at HCA Florida Largo Hospital, one of nine HCA Healthcare transplant hospitals. In 2024, Danny proposed to Marisa, and the couple has plans to get married in April 2025, during Donate Life Month.

“Since this all happened, even though it was terrifying, it changed everything about my life,” Danny shared. “Half because I met someone who pushes me to be a better version of myself every day, and half because I know that someone else made the selfless decision to donate organs for a total stranger. My donor and their family deserve a legacy of kindness and strength. [HCA Florida] Largo’s team is a family, when they tell you they care they mean it. They’ll do everything they can to give you the best possible outcome.”

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are proud to spotlight Maria Perez, the director of laboratory services at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. Originally from Puerto Rico, Maria's passion for science began in third grade, leading her from pre-med studies to a dedicated career in laboratory medicine.

"We play a critical role behind the scenes. Our results help doctors diagnose diseases, including leukemia and cancer. That is what makes this work so rewarding," said Maria.

Maria is also committed to inspiring the next generation. She actively visits schools to educate students about laboratory professionals' essential role in healthcare.

When asked for advice to young women in science, Maria said, "You’re not just doing a job—you’re saving lives. Find your passion and pursue it."

We’re proud to honor the incredible contributions of women in healthcare and beyond, recognizing their dedication, resilience and leadership. Together, let’s celebrate and uplift women who are shaping the future of healthcare.

Alphonso Harvey has spent 51 years working for HCA Florida Memorial Hospital and says he still wakes up each day inspired, energized and ready to spend another day with his "second family!" Alphonso joined our Environmental Services (EVS) Department in 1974, "...it feels like yesterday! Sure, I've seen changes through the years, but being here more than half my life, I haven't changed, I treat every day like it was my first day at work.

I enjoy going to our patient rooms and making sure they're clean and safe - I treat each room as if my family was coming inside the room. That's what makes it special for me to do my best.

People have come and gone through the years, but I'm still here!"

This black history month, we salute you Alphonso for being steadfast, passionate about what you do to keep our patients safe, and most of all for your kind spirit and commitment.

Thank you from all of us!

Rosa Nicholas plans on some big changes this year after making the decision to have weight loss surgery. Rosa felt she needed a healthier lifestyle especially when her weight held her back from participating more actively in her 4-year-old grandson's life. "There were just so many things I couldn't do any longer. I decided to take charge of my health!"

Rosa underwent gastric sleeve surgery this week and already feels the weight of procrastination being lifted off her shoulders. "My weight loss experience will help me with my knees and will make traveling so much easier. I have plans to visit Spain and Italy this year - I've got to be ready.

The nursing staff has been incredible. This is my first time at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital and the staff make me feel like I'm the only one here. Always very pleasant and asking how they can help, regardless of the time of day. I've been very well taken care of from my surgeon to the very compassionate team of nurses looking after me.

I've spent more than 20 years in customer service, and this has been by far my best experience."

Thank you, Rosa...and we salute you for chasing your heart to Barcelona and Rome as a lot lighter and healthier new you!
