Holiday ECMO Blessings
Holiday blessings for 43-year-old Monica Williams came in the form of taking her first walking steps after laying in the ICU for a few weeks on ECMO. She suffered a bad flare up of Lupus and when she arrived in our ER having difficulty breathing, doctors recognized she was in serious trouble.
On December 2, Monica was placed on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) providing lung support while her body healed.
For Monica, the pain started in her legs, and it progressed up to her lungs. Her daughter Monique said, "It's a blessing that she came here (to HCA Florida Memorial Hospital). The staff have been awesome and walked us through everything, every day, treating us like family. They got her breathing again. I can't thank all the staff on all the shifts enough - their motivation to keep her alive kept me strong for my mom. They saved her life."
Monica should be discharged from our hospital soon once strong enough to walk on her own and make it home for the holidays. Keep up the great work. We are all cheering for you.
