"From the moment I was admitted to labor & delivery, the nurses were incredible. Each and every nurse and staff member on L&D, postpartum, and in the NICU was absolutely amazing. I developed many friendships during my stay, and I couldn't have done it without them," said Chloe Crenshaw.

At 29 weeks, Chloe was admitted to HCA Florida Capital Hospital due to complications in her pregnancy. She said, "I was extremely anxious about this long-term stay and was concerned I would become lonely and possibly depressed. But then I was introduced to the remarkable team at HCA Florida Capital Hospital."

“The amazing team even threw me a baby shower before our beautiful son, Beau, was delivered via C-section. The team cared for us like we were family, and that is exactly what they have become - family.”

Thank you to our colleagues who are committed to creating a nurturing and safe environment for every precious arrival. As one of the largest healthcare providers in the state, we’ve welcomed over 32,000 newborns in the past year.

Goldie Edelstein was completing another word game when Clinical Informatics Director and nurse, Luciana Swiridowsky, surprised her with some flowers to wish her on her 101st birthday. Luciana has been doing this quietly on her own for over 35 years with more than 50 Centennials she has met while being a nurse at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital. "Goldie was as receptive and as bubbly with appreciation as they all have been...Goldie is extra special...she has such a twinkle in her eye and has been incredibly wonderful to chat with," said Luciana.

Goldie is the proud mother of three ladies, Caren-Denise, Pamela-Joy and Judi-Lynne. She beams with pride speaking about her life with her daughters who are all in their 60s, "How lucky I am to have seen them grow and become mothers and grandmothers. I think it was mostly the younger kids who have helped me keep my 101st birthday celebration going on for the past two weeks...and I know it will be going on for another two! Life is good and I've been blessed."

In the hospital for kidney treatment, Goldie reflects on how fortunate life has been for her. The eighth child in her family born to her mother who was 45 at the time, she was a switchboard operator then a "Kelly" representative for more than 22 years. Hospitalist Dr. Joseph Salenga says she is one of the friendliest of patients he has met, and is always a joy to talk to.

Goldie says, "Care here (at Memorial Hospital) has been wonderful, I just don't want to come back! I try to stay healthy, keep feeding my head with brain games to keep me going. And, at 4 feet 9"...if I were to ever fall, at least I'm closer to the floor!" she says with a big laugh.

All of us at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital wish you Goldie a wonderful 101st and the best of continued good health!

82% of eligible individuals are choosing not to undergo potentially life-saving lung cancer screening, according to a new study released by the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Lung cancer is the country's leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with most cases not caught until a late stage when the survival rate is only 8%. When identified early, lung cancer is treatable. As early stages are largely symptom-free, its essential to follow ACS recommendation for annual screenings.

“Now I definitely know how blessed I am,” said Hornbecker, “and I hopefully get to see my grandchildren grow up.”

Kathleen Hornbecker is proud to be able to get her blood pumping while attending cardiac rehabilitation at HCA Florida Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida following her heart transplant late last year. However, six months ago, none of this would have seemed possible because her heart was failing. Over the past 20 years, she has had two heart attacks, a stroke and congestive heart failure twice.

Her primary care physician, Dr. Rakesh Mittal, referred her to his colleague at HCA Florida Largo Hospital, Dr. Andrew Boyle, the Medical Director of Advanced Heart Failure. After extensive testing and review Dr. Boyle found Kathleen's heart was “rocking” more so than pumping. It was ultimately determined that Kathleen was a candidate for heart transplant, a surgical procedure that would replace her failing heart with a healthier heart from an organ donor.

At HCA Florida Healthcare we are proud to say that more physicians in Florida recommend cardiologists practicing in the HCA Florida Healthcare network than any other Florida health system. Learn more about the patient-centered cardiovascular care we provide: https://bit.ly/3wSZOw1

You've heard of allergies and asthma, but what about allergic asthma? It's a chronic form of asthma that's triggered by breathing in allergens. The immune system views these allergens as a threat, and overreacts to them. This leads to airway inflammation.

Common environmental triggers — like pet dander, pollen and mold — can cause an allergic asthma attack. If you suspect you're suffering from allergic asthma, do your best to minimize these triggers.

"I feel so lucky,” Luis shared. “I love my life and my director, because if she [Kristy] didn’t pay attention, it would have been different.”

Luis is known for the positivity he brings with him to work each day, sharing a joke with his colleagues at the start of each shift. One morning in January, Luis’ workday began differently as he started experiencing symptoms that included weakness, dizziness and difficulty speaking. Being trained to identify the signs of a stroke, Kristy Santiago, food services director, immediately recognized Luis was having a stroke. Kristy immediately rushed Luis to HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital’s, emergency room.

Thanks to Kristy’s fast recognition of Luis’ stroke symptoms and the specialized care he received, Luis spent only a few days in the hospital as a patient and was able to return as a colleague just a few weeks later.

Manuel Vera and his daughters, Nermais and Kimberlie have a special bond. He has loved dancing with his two daughters as they have grown up, especially at their Quinceaneras, their Sweet Fifteenth birthdays.

When he experienced a stroke his neighbor rushed him to HCA Florida Brandon Hospital's Emergency Room. He was treated immediately by the hospital's Comprehensive Stroke Center team and began his amazing recovery at the Brandon Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation Center.

We are happy to share that Manuel is now home with his family, in good health, preparing for his daughter’s big day in August. Thank you to the dedicated colleagues across HCA Florida Healthcare who care like family for patients, like Manuel, through every step of their care journey.
