💚 Kidney Awareness Moment 💚

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is defined as kidney damage or a decreased kidney function lasting longer than 3 months.

A key measurement used to assess kidney function is eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate). This number shows how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood.

CKD often develops silently, with few symptoms in the early stages. That’s why awareness, screening, and early detection are critical.

Your kidneys may be small, but they perform five powerful functions that keep your body alive and balanced every day:

• Filter waste – removing toxins from the blood
• Balance fluids – maintaining the right amount of water in your body
• Regulate electrolytes – keeping minerals like sodium and potassium in balance
• Control blood pressure – helping regulate circulation and vascular health
• Produce red blood cells – releasing hormones that support oxygen delivery throughout the body

When kidneys struggle, every system in the body feels the impact.

Where Are Your Kidneys and How Do They Work?

You have two kidneys, each about the size of a fist, located just below your rib cage on either side of your spine. Though small, they are extraordinarily sophisticated organs.

Inside each kidney are about one million microscopic filtering units called nephrons. These nephrons act like highly specialized filtration systems. Every minute, blood flows into the kidneys, waste is separated, and clean blood is returned to circulation.

In fact, your kidneys filter approximately 50 gallons of blood every single day.
