Breathwork!

Regulation of our autonomic nervous system is crucial if we want to transition smoothly from wakefulness to sleep.

When stress and anxiety – fretting about today and worrying about tomorrow – prevent us from restfulness, it means that our sympathetic nervous system is overactive, and we need to combat this overactivity with calming techniques. By turning to breathwork, we can facilitate this much-needed balance.

Breathwork helps deactivate our fight-or-flight response and engages the rest-and-digest mode, which is vital for deep, restorative sleep. Practicing mindful breathing not only reduces stress but also promotes a calming influence over our entire nervous system.

To get started, try this simple breathing exercise before bedtime:

𝟰-𝟳-𝟴 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲:
Sit or lie down comfortably.
Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4.
Hold your breath for a count of 7.
Exhale completely through your mouth for a count of 8.
Repeat the cycle 4 times.

With consistent practice, this can become your natural, go-to solution for a restful night's sleep, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated for the day ahead.
