Can someone truly teach something they haven't achieved themselves? This age-old question sparks interesting discussions.
Consider Olympic team coaches, for instance - many have never been Olympic winners themselves.
The truth is, some people's strengths lie not in achieving, but in absorbing, sharing, and guiding others to reach their dreams. Effective teaching is about recognizing individuals' unique needs and having the knowledge and skills to help them grow.
I used to be a firm believer in "I can't teach anything I can't do myself." And I do still tend to follow this pathway in my teaching the majority of the time...
However, through my experiences and personal journey through life, I have learned that isn't always the truth and doesn't always need to be the case. And there's always more than one path to take.
While I recognize doing and teaching require different skill sets, it is in fact possible for someone to teach what they can't do themselves, as long as they possess the necessary knowledge and are willing to adapt their teaching methods.
So, when seeking a coach or teacher, look for someone with a deep understanding of the subject you came to learn, who can communicate complex ideas, and who resonates with you on a personal level.
Remember, teaching is not just about achieving; it's about empowering others to reach their full potential!
Look for people who have achieved what you want to achieve...but also, don't be afraid to look further beyond that as well.
Skills are one thing.
Knowledge and being able to express that information in a way that can be, not only understood; but also implemented by the person sitting in front of you is another.
ANNNND both together *chef kiss, of course!
If you can find that, you have struck gold!!
This is the real sweet spot.
But don't shy away or become fearful if a teacher teaches something they might not be perfect at themselves. We are all human and have our own unique set of strengths and weaknesses.
As long as a teacher is always a student themselves, you can't go wrong. When it comes to selecting your dream coach or program, follow your intuition, and don't be afraid to go for what you want or ask for what you want!!!! Just because something might not be your teachers "go to" or their main "strength"... Doesn't always mean they can't still help you with it. So don't be afraid to reach out and ask!!
A teacher, coach, educator, etc.'s goal should always be to have their student surpass the teacher. To get the student to a place where they can do things better than the teacher themselves. A teacher should hope to give their students ALL the information the teacher has accumulated to best assist their students and give them the best chance of success. (Or have the maturity to recommend someone who can better assist you if what you are asking for isn't possible or is outside their scope of knowledge.) -which is why a teacher always staying a student is also important, we can never stop growing or learning and sharing that evolved info!-
Anyways, back on topic, it's my personal opinion for students that are looking for the proper guidance and are wondering which teachers are the next faceless internet craze... And which teachers are someone who will ACTUALLY get you where you want to go:
Never be afraid to speak up, never be afraid to ask for what you want and never be afraid to absorb what's being told to you if it's resonating or intriguing....even if it's not your teachers forte or something they can perfectly execute themselves.
A teacher is only sharing their knowledge... What they say isn't law, and you get decide how open or closed off you are to the information provided to you. And by finding a coach you truly align with, that will cut this detective work in half.
You're paying to learn, in whatever way that looks like, to best suit your needs! And that can show up in many forms and look many different ways. It's all about what you need, and where you feel comfortable and how far you can be stretched outside of that comfort zone with out breaking.
