👣 Kick Counts: Your Baby’s Way of Talking to You

Did you know your baby has a rhythm — and kick counts help you learn their language?

Starting around 28 weeks, take a few quiet moments each day to tune in. Kick counts aren’t just about numbers; they’re about connection and awareness.

Here’s how to do them:
✨ Find a calm spot, sit or lie on your side.
✨ Notice every roll, flutter, or jab.
✨ You should feel 10 movements in 2 hours — but most babies do it much faster!
✨ Learn your baby’s normal pattern — that’s your baseline of reassurance.

If something feels off — slower, different, or unusually quiet — trust your instincts and call your provider. You know your baby best. 💛

Kick counts are more than a medical tool — they’re a moment of mindfulness, bonding, and peace between you and your baby.

🤰🏾 Effacement & Station — What Do They REALLY Mean?

When your provider says, “You’re 80% effaced and at -2 station”… what exactly are they telling you? Let’s break it down ⬇️

✨ Effacement = How thin and soft your cervix is getting to prepare for birth.
• Measured in percentages (0% = not thinned at all, 100% = fully thinned and ready).
• Think of it like a turtleneck sweater stretching out — the “neck” becomes thinner until it blends into the body of the sweater.

✨ Station = Where baby’s head is in relation to your pelvis.
• Measured from -5 to +5.
• Negative numbers = baby is still high up.
• 0 station = baby’s head is at the ischial spines (mid-pelvis).
• Positive numbers = baby is moving down, getting close to birth! (+5 means baby is crowning 👶🏽).

💡 Why It Matters:
Effacement + station give your provider a better picture of how your labor is progressing — beyond dilation. You can be 3 cm dilated, but if you’re still thick and baby is high, labor may need more time. On the flip side, you can be less dilated but fully effaced with baby low — and things can move quickly!

🔍 The “Real” Talk:
When your provider updates your effacement and station, they’re really saying:
• How ready your cervix is ✅
• How engaged your baby is in the birth canal ✅
• How close you might be to active labor ✅

💬 Mamas, did you know you can be fully effaced before labor even starts? Share your experience below! ⬇️

🌍💚 Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day 💚🌍

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common childhood physical disability — affecting movement, muscle tone, and posture. But it doesn’t define a child’s potential, joy, or brilliance.

Babies and children with CP may move differently, meet milestones on their own timeline, and need unique forms of support. Their bodies and brains simply move through the world in a different rhythm, and that rhythm is still beautiful.

As parents, caregivers, and professionals, our role is to make space for inclusion, accessibility, and celebration of every child’s abilities. 💪🏾✨

💚 Early intervention matters
💚 Every milestone deserves celebration
💚 Every baby deserves to be seen, supported and loved.

Let’s raise awareness, spread compassion, and stand beside families impacted by CP with power and partnership.

✨ October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month ✨

This month, we pause to remember the little lives that were gone too soon. 💜 Every baby matters, every story matters, and every family who has experienced this kind of loss deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

For the parents who carry invisible grief, for the siblings who wonder, and for the families who quietly light candles in memory — you are not alone. Your love is real. Your loss is real. And your baby will always matter.

On October 15th, many will join in the Wave of Light 🕯️, lighting candles at 7 PM to honor these precious lives. Together, we shine a light on the love that will never fade.

🤍 To every family who has walked this journey — we see you, we honor you, and we hold space with you this month and always.

Did you know your uterus has actually been contracting your whole life…and only now that it’s much bigger (aka…you’re PREGNANT) you are starting to realize it!

Uterine contractions are a normal part of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Your uterus regularly contracts during your cycle, especially during your period.

Have you ever had “period cramps”? Yep, those are contractions! Lol

Your uterus is undergoing the same mechanism it does during labor.

Some women do not experience painful period cramps, and that may be due to her prostaglandin levels. (Prostaglandins = hormone-like substances that aid in the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle)

Women with high levels of prostaglandins in their uterine lining experience more painful period cramps as opposed to women with lower levels of prostaglandins preset.

This kind of makes sense…because guess which hormone-like substance is readily present during labor….prostaglandins!! Lol

AND, guess what is given to you during a labor induction….synthetic prostaglandins!!! 😬💞👶🏽🤰🏾

✨ Let’s talk about s*x during pregnancy ✨

For most people, it’s perfectly safe—and actually comes with some amazing benefits:
💆🏽‍♀️ Reduces stress & lowers blood pressure
🍑 Strengthens your pelvic floor (so important for birth!)
💪🏾 Boosts your immune system
💦 Doubles as a workout
⏱ Can help naturally encourage labor if you’re past your due date
🔥 Might even feel better than before pregnancy!

⚠️ When to avoid s*x during pregnancy:
• Your water has broken
• Placenta previa (placenta covers cervix)
• Unexplained bleeding
• History of premature labor
• Cervix is dilated
• Or if your provider recommends avoiding it.

💡 Pro tip: If needed, use a natural, water-based lubricant for extra comfort.

Bottom line: intimacy is not only safe, but it’s also a beautiful way to connect with your partner, ease stress, and boost your mood during pregnancy. ❤️

🌙 Safe Sleep & Room Sharing 🌕

Your baby’s sleep space matters. The safest place for baby to sleep is:
✅ In your room, close to you — but in their own crib, bassinet, or play yard.
✅ On a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet.
✅ With NO pillows, blankets, bumpers, or stuffed animals.

💡 Room-sharing (without bed-sharing) reduces the risk of SIDS by up to 50%. It also makes nighttime feeding and comforting easier for parents.

✨ Think of it this way: Baby sleeps safest in their space and in your presence.

Stress isn’t “just stress.”

When our bodies live in survival mode for too long, cortisol (our stress hormone) stays elevated. What many don’t realize is that chronic high cortisol doesn’t just weigh on your mental health — it can impact pregnancy, too.

Research shows that consistently high stress and cortisol levels may increase the risk for preterm labor. This means stress is not just a “mind thing” — it’s a whole-body experience that can influence both parent and baby.

This is why caring for your mental health during pregnancy is not a luxury — it’s an essential part of prenatal care. Rest, boundaries, therapy, breathwork, community, support — these are not “extras.” They are protective, life-giving, and powerful tools that help lower stress and create a healthier environment for you and your little one.

✨ Your peace matters. Your body listens. And your baby benefits.

✨ Did you know? Delayed cord clamping allows baby to receive extra blood from the placenta—helping fill their liver with rich iron stores that support growth and development. 🩸💪🏾

But here’s the balance: while it boosts iron, it can also increase the risk of newborn jaundice. 🌞💛

✨ Let’s talk about the Bishop Score! ✨

Ever heard your provider mention your “Bishop score”? It’s a tool used to measure how “ready” your cervix might be for labor—especially before an induction.

The score looks at 5 things:
1️⃣ Dilation – How open your cervix is
2️⃣ Effacement – How thin your cervix has become
3️⃣ Station – How low baby is in the pelvis
4️⃣ Consistency – How soft or firm your cervix feels
5️⃣ Position – Whether the cervix points forward, mid, or back

💡 A higher score (usually 8 or more) means your body may respond well to an induction. A lower score may suggest that your cervix needs more time or support to get ready.

⚠️ Important: The Bishop score is just one tool! It doesn’t predict exactly when labor will start, and YOU still have the right to ask questions, make choices, and decline interventions if you’re not comfortable.

👉🏾 Remember: You are the decision-maker in your birth! Knowing what this score means can help you have more informed conversations with your provider.

💬 Have you ever been told your Bishop score? Did anyone explain what it meant?

I can hardly believe that August 19th marked three years since the birth of my B.A.B.Y, Birthing A Better You. While I was called to this work long before creating the business, this date made the vision official. Over the years, I have poured my heart into this work—dedicating myself each day to supporting birthing people and their families through some of life’s most raw, beautiful, and vulnerable moments.. From Greensboro, to Winston Salem, to Clemmons, to High Point, to Kernersville, to Thomasville, to Eden, to Charlotte, to Burlington, to Durham, to Raleigh.. It is an honor to witness growth, resilience, and transformation in the families I serve. I truly love what I do, and I know I am exactly where I am meant to be. I’m excited to see what the future holds as this journey continues. Thank you all so very much for allowing Birthing A Better You to be apart of your journey as well!! 💞😍
