The Writer's Group, which started up in 1999, is aimed to foster, support and enhance various writings produced by the members. It is centered around an open and passionate discussion that allows the seniors to present their written work and gain constructive feedback. Location of the meeting may vary. Our Nottingham intern Sam Bova, an SU student, is working with group members to publish their work in a newsletter. He stayed after the larger group meeting to work with residents on planning their edits. We are grateful for Sam’s work this semester. The Nottingham is also looking very festive for the holidays.

Hi, everyone, I am thinking about you even though we can’t be together this afternoon as we usually are for our Wednesday writing workshop. I’m sending Kara these writing prompts so she can run them off and get them to you as I know you are staying in your apartments and can’t meet face-to-face. Even though we can’t be together to write and share our work, we can still keep writing and express our feelings to others through our writing.

After you touch base with the world as you usually do, turn off the news, put down the newspaper, and get out your notebooks and pens or go to your computer and work on your stories. We will be together again in the future, and we will want to share our work. Your job right now is stay healthy and take care, stay in touch with your loved ones, and also to do some writing.

I am wishing you the best and much love from my home on Shirley Road where I am teaching my university classes online. Take care everyone, Love, Eileen (Professor Schell)

--Write about a memory that was joyful. Share with your family or friends over the phone, through a letter, or email when you finish writing this. Everyone needs a boost right now, including you! Ask your family members or friends to do the same and call or email or write you with a joyful memory.

--Write a doctor or nurse or medical provider you know a note of encouragement and thanks and send it via email or through the mail. Send a favorite poem or write one yourself.

--The old saying is that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. In Central New York, it’s often that March weather is up and down like a see-saw. But there is hope! Spring is on the way. What are the signs of spring that you are noticing out your window? Are the birds singing? Signs of green grass? Maybe even seeing plant shoots pushing up from the ground through this week’s snow? Temperature changes?

--Write about a time when you and your family, co-workers, or friends overcame adversity in your lives? What does that memory mean to you now?

--Keep a daily journal about all you are feeling and seeing around you. Write it all down, even if it's just a sentence or a paragraph every day. When our group meets again, we can share these journals and talk about them.
