As someone who has spent many years walking alongside families through the seasons of birth, I feel compelled to share something important happening here in Wisconsin. There are proposed changes being considered that would limit the ability of licensed home birth midwives to attend VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), breech, and twin births.
These are not emergencies by default. In the hands of a well-trained, experienced midwife, these births can and do unfold safely at home. Families choose this care because it reflects their values, their history, and their needs. And often, they choose it because hospitals do not offer real options.
Currently, no hospitals in Wisconsin provide 24/7 breech birth services, and most will not support a vaginal birth after cesarean or a planned twin birth. In most cases, families are told their only option is surgery. That’s not informed choice. It’s a lack of access.
If we remove the ability for midwives to offer care in these situations, we don’t make birth safer. We push families out of the system. We leave them without the trusted providers they’ve built relationships with. And we ignore the wisdom and safety that home birth can provide when done with proper training and support.
If you care about birth freedom, about families being able to choose how and where they give birth, I invite you to write a letter in support of Wisconsin’s licensed midwives and the families they serve. And if you've had a VBAC, breech or twin birth with a home birth midwife and cherish that opportunity, know that your voice in support of the current regulations will shine.
