DARVO is an acronym for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender, a manipulative tactic used by abusers and wrongdoers to avoid accountability by denying their actions, attacking the victim's credibility, and then portraying themselves as the actual victim. This psychological strategy, identified by researcher Jennifer Joy Freyd, shifts blame, gaslights victims, and can occur in personal relationships, workplaces, or even institutions to silence survivors and maintain power.
How DARVO works:
Deny: The perpetrator refuses to admit wrongdoing, minimizes the harm, or claims the event didn't happen.
Attack: They attack the victim's character, credibility, or motives, questioning their sanity or intentions.
Reverse Victim & Offender: The abuser portrays themselves as the wronged party, accusing the victim of being the actual aggressor or lying.
