Stream Directly Through Your Hearing Aids 📱🎧

Many modern hearing aids allow you to stream phone calls, podcasts, and audiobooks directly from your smartphone. No headphones required.

Streaming provides clearer sound and makes it easier to enjoy media, whether you’re walking, relaxing, or on the go. With just one tap, your hearing aids become part of your everyday technology.

Convenience and clarity can go hand in hand.

It’s common for people to notice their voices sound different when they’re first fitted with hearing aids. This happens because your brain is hearing sounds it may have missed before.

A helpful tip is to read aloud for a few minutes each day. This allows your brain to adjust more quickly and comfortably. With consistent wear, your voice will sound more natural again.

Small steps like this can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

“The smallest hearing aid must be the best option.” 👂💡

It’s easy to assume smaller hearing aids are always better, but that isn’t always true. Very small devices have limited space for features, power, and speakers, making them less effective for certain hearing losses.

The best hearing aid balances comfort, performance, and your listening needs. Larger styles can still be discreet while offering better clarity and advanced technology.

Function should always come first.

Work environments can highlight challenges you might not notice anywhere else!

A patient once told me, “I feel like everyone at work is mumbling.” 😟 She was in meetings all the time and started pulling back from projects because she was worried she would miss something important and look unprofessional.

For those with untreated hearing loss in situations like these, it is not JUST about hearing. It is about confidence, and how comfortable you feel speaking up and staying engaged.

So we talked through what meetings were like for her day to day, then tested her hearing and reviewed why certain speech clarity issues show up more in group settings, especially when people are not facing you or are talking across the room.

We focused on a plan that would help her follow conversations more easily without feeling like she had to work so hard to keep up. 📝

The win was huge for her. She told me, “I stopped blaming my coworkers for being quiet. Now I can follow conversations even when someone is turned toward the whiteboard.”

Even better, she said her confidence at work had completely changed. She was participating more, speaking up, and no longer second guessing herself. 🥹💓

If you have ever felt like everyone around you is mumbling, you are definitely not alone. There is usually more going on, and it is something we can help with.

Once in a while, a patient tells you something that really sticks with you. ⬇️

He said, “Last year, when I went on my morning walks, I could hear a group of chickadees chirping. Now I can see them, but I don’t hear them.” 🤨

When changes are gradual, your brain fills in the gaps and it becomes your new normal without you even realizing it!

So we walked through what he had been noticing (or not), then tested his hearing and discussed how softer environmental sounds often fade first. It is not that those sounds disappear… it is that they become harder to pick up.

This is the part that stuck with me 👉 When he came back for his follow-up visit, he told me, “I could hear my footsteps on the gravel and a bird chirping three houses down. I didn’t realize how much life I had been missing. I thought it would be loud, but it’s very natural sounding!”

Are there any sounds that you haven’t heard in a while?

🎊👂 It’s Better Speech and Hearing Month!

Every May, I look forward to National Speech‑Language‑Hearing Month! This month is a chance to pause and highlight the importance of communication and hearing health. It is also a moment to recognize how far our field has come.

For those of us in this work, the month is a reminder of the countless stories behind every evaluation, fitting, and breakthrough. As science continues to evolve, our tools get better, and our understanding of communication disorders grows deeper. But the heart of what we do remains the same: helping people connect more fully with the world around them.

As we move through May, I’m grateful for the clinicians who shaped this field, the colleagues who continue to push it forward, and the patients who remind me why this work matters!

🔊 International Noise Awareness Day

Noise-induced hearing loss is more common than many people realize.

Nearly 1 in 2 young people listen to audio at unsafe volume levels, and many are regularly exposed to loud environments like concerts and sporting events. Over time, this exposure can cause permanent damage, often without immediate warning signs.

“I’ll deal with it later.”

It is very common for people to live with hearing loss for five years or more before they decide to seek help. During that time, many people adjust their routines without realizing it. They may stop participating in group conversations, avoid noisy restaurants, or rely on others to fill in the gaps. 🗣️

A helpful tip is to pay attention to the changes you have made in your daily life. If you notice yourself withdrawing or working harder just to keep up, a baseline hearing test can provide clarity and direction. Addressing hearing loss as soon as possible can make a significant difference in your quality of life. 💗

“I can just manage the way I always have.” 🤨

Many people believe they can continue managing their hearing loss by turning up the television, asking others to repeat themselves, or avoiding certain social situations altogether. Over time, these adjustments can quietly limit where you go and how you engage with the world around you.

A helpful reminder is that hearing aids are customized to your specific hearing needs. When properly programmed and supported, they can help reduce listening effort and improve clarity in areas that once felt overwhelming. You should not have to give up restaurants, social gatherings, or meaningful activities because of hearing difficulties. 🙌

One of the biggest myths I hear is: “If you have ringing in your ears, you just have to live with it.”

Here’s the truth: tinnitus is common, and while we can’t always “turn it off,” we can help turn down how much it takes up space in your day.

I’m Dr. Berger, and one of my favorite parts of what I do is helping people put words to something that can feel really hard to explain. Tinnitus can be exhausting, especially when it’s quiet, and your brain won’t “turn it down.”

If you’re feeling frustrated, worried, or exhausted, you’re not alone. Many people wait to bring it up because they assume nothing can be done. 🫶

We’ll take it step by step: we’ll talk through what you’re noticing, check your hearing, and build a plan that feels realistic and manageable, so you can get back to focusing on life instead of the ringing. 🧩
