TV volume creeping up is one of the most common ways hearing changes show up. 📺

A patient came in recently and told me, “My family keeps saying the TV is too loud, but I think the speakers are just bad.” They were a little skeptical, and I get it. It can be hard to notice changes when they happen slowly.

Honestly, I have been that person in other areas of life. I did not realize I was turning things up until someone pointed it out.

So we talked through what they were noticing at home, then we checked hearing and reviewed what it meant for everyday listening. Often, the issue is not that the TV is quiet. It is that certain speech sounds are harder to catch, so the brain asks for more volume.

The best part was the small wins. They told me the TV volume came down, conversations at home felt easier, and the evening felt more relaxed! If you have noticed the volume creeping up or you are relying on captions more than you used to, we can help you get clarity on what is going on! 🙌

Parkinson’s disease is often thought of as a movement disorder, but it can also affect how the brain processes sound. 🧠 Many people with Parkinson’s experience difficulty understanding speech, especially in background noise, even when hearing levels seem normal.

These listening challenges may increase with age and as the disease progresses. Monitoring hearing early and considering amplification when appropriate can help reduce listening effort and support clearer communication. Protecting hearing health plays an important role in staying connected and engaged in daily life. 💬

⏳ Hearing aids don’t need to be replaced every year.

Most hearing aids last 3–7 years, and often longer with proper care. Consistent at-home cleaning and a few in-office tune-ups each year can help protect your investment and keep your devices working their best for years to come.

A little maintenance goes a long way. 👂💚

A patient told me, “I just avoid going out now. It is too loud anyway.” 😔

Restaurants are one of the first places people realize they are working way too hard to keep up. In difficult listening situations, your brain is straining to fill in missing words; it is exhausting.

I have felt that kind of fatigue in a noisy room, too. You can hear sound everywhere, but it still feels hard to follow the conversation that matters.

So when patients come in with this particular issue, we build a plan that focuses on clarity, comfort, and realistic expectations, not just turning things up. 🙅‍♀️

The small win this particular patient reported later was huge. They stayed at dinner longer, felt more confident, and stopped doing the constant guessing and smiling!

If you have been avoiding restaurants or group gatherings because listening feels like work, you are not alone. 🍝🍹 We can help!

If something isn’t working, say something. 🗣️

Whether it’s music that’s too loud, a conversation from another room, or a group talking over each other, advocating early can prevent frustration later. Many people don’t realize there’s an issue unless it’s gently pointed out.

Asking for small adjustments can lead to much better listening experiences for everyone involved. 💚

A few of my favorite spring things:

🌿 opening the windows on the first warm day

🐦 hearing the birds in the morning

🚶‍♀️ taking a walk after lunch

☕️ coffee on the porch

And here’s my audiologist tie-in: one of my favorite behind-the-scenes parts of my job is troubleshooting acute ear issues, routine device maintenance, and cleaning waxy ears!

It sounds small, but it can make a huge difference in speech clarity—especially when you’re trying to catch the “little sounds” that make spring feel like spring. 🐦🪻

If you’ve noticed you’re not hearing those higher, softer sounds as clearly as you used to (or speech feels muffled), that’s often an early sign worth checking. The good news? Sometimes it’s a simple fix.

Sometimes it’s a bigger conversation. Either way, we’ll walk you through it.

We get to know our patients like family. We celebrate their milestones, we learn their stories, and sometimes, we feel their absence more than people might expect.

Every so often, a family reaches out after a loved one has passed, asking what to do with their hearing aids. And while those calls are never easy, they’re filled with so much generosity.

If you ever find yourself in that position, know this: hearing aids can be donated and make a real difference. We collect them here at the office and pass them along to mission organizations, where they’re refurbished and given to someone in need.

It’s one small way a loved one’s care can continue, helping someone stay connected, just like they did.

If you have questions, we’re always here to walk you through it.

St. Patrick’s Day is full of music, laughter, and great conversations.

However, nearly 1 in 5 adults experience some degree of hearing loss, making regular hearing care just as important as any lucky charm.

Healthy hearing helps you stay connected to it all, no magic needed, just good care for your ears. 💚

Wishing you a day filled with joy, great company, and sounds worth celebrating!

How are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year? ☘️👇

Struggling to hear in noisy places? 🍽️ Location matters.

If you’re dining out or attending a gathering:

👉 Choose a booth or corner table

👉 Sit with your back to a wall

👉 Avoid sitting near kitchens, speakers, or high-traffic areas

Reducing background noise helps your brain focus on speech, with or without hearing aids. Sometimes, where you sit is just as important as what you hear. 👂
