If you walked into our clinic today, you might think you stumbled into a high-tech athletic training facility by mistake! (Don't worry, you can leave the heavy barbells at home).

But here’s the truth! your eyes don't work in a vacuum.

At some point, the body and the eyes have to be trained together, not independent of one another. That’s exactly why you see our patients doing dynamic, movement-based exercises like in the photo below! We aren't just checking if you can read the bottom line of an eye chart; we are training your brain, eyes, and body to team up and work as a perfect unit.

You don't need a doctor's note or a special referral to start improving how your eyes and body work together. You can take control of your vision care today.

📞 Ready to see the difference? Give us a call at today to schedule your evaluation. Let’s get your eyes and body on the same page!

Vision Development Center is a huge part of the community because of one dreamer. One doctor decided that even though vision therapy is a unique niche, and even though our area might not have fully understood what it was yet, she wanted to see this community flourish.

Dr. Joan Bauernfeind saw a need and chose to build a place where local families could find life changing developmental vision care right here at home. Her passion and dedication are the reasons the Vision Development Center exists today, helping patients unlock their full potential and see the world more clearly.

Thank you, Dr. Joan, for your vision, your heart, and your commitment to making our community a brighter place to grow.

It looks like a simple plastic card, but the Lifesaver Card is a gym for your brain.

We use these in vision therapy to train your eyes to work together as a team. By "fusing" those circles into one 3D image, patients improve their focus, reduce eye strain, and stop words from "floating" on the page.

It’s all about building visual flexibility for a clearer, more comfortable world!

"What is the end goal of vision therapy?"

From a clinical perspective, we’re looking for a stronger brain-body connection and optimized visual processing. But if you want to know the true heart of VDC, it’s much simpler than that.

We want our clients to have great lives. We want the daily frustrations to fade and the 'hard' things to become easy. Our mission isn’t just about better eyesight; it’s about giving you the freedom to thrive without your vision holding you back.

At Vision Development Center, we use a diverse range of training tools designed for every stage of life. While the methods vary for each individual, the ultimate goal never changes: teaching the eyes and the body to function as one cohesive unit.

Building this connection is essential for everything from reading and learning to athletic performance and daily coordination. By improving how the brain processes visual information, we help patients of all ages move through the world with more confidence and clarity.

Check out one of our rockstar patients working on the Sparkle Lite-Brite!

She’s sporting those red and green anaglyphic glasses to help her eyes learn how to work together as a team. Since each lens filters out a different color, her brain has to keep both eyes "turned on" to see the whole picture.

Watch with us as she begins to connect the dots (pun intended!) on what her eyes should be looking for. It is so cool to see that "aha!" moment when everything clicks into place.

When your visual system isn’t working efficiently, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack… or spotting tiny red dots on a board while wearing red and green anaglyph glasses.

That’s what vision challenges can feel like every day blurred focus, missed details, and extra effort just to keep up.

Vision therapy works to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain, improving skills like tracking, focusing, and visual processing, so what once felt impossible becomes clear and manageable.

Clarity changes everything. Call us today to arrange your consultation!

Here are some of the benefits of our VR training programs:

-Develops real-world depth perception and peripheral awareness
-Enhances tracking and hand-eye coordination

Vision development isn't just for kids, but it’s critical to catch the signs early. If your child is struggling with reading, experiencing frequent headaches, or avoiding close-up work, it could be a sign that their visual skills need attention.

- Common signs your child may need vision development:
- Skipping lines or losing their place while reading
- Holding books, tablets, or papers unusually close to their face
- Frequent eye rubbing, fatigue, or complaints of headaches
- Short attention span during close-up tasks or homework
- Difficulty catching a ball or judging distances

Early detection is the key to helping your child reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond. Ready to give your child the tools they need to succeed? Schedule a vision evaluation with us today.

Let’s start with the heart of our practice: Dr. Joan Bauernfiend.

Dr. Joan is a massive IU fan through and through! ⚪🔴 After earning her Doctorate at the IU School of Optometry and completing a specialized residency in Florida, she brought her expertise back home to Southern Indiana.

A few fun facts about Dr. Joan:

Specialized Expert: In 2015, she became a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD). One of only a handful of doctors in Indiana with that board certification!

Deeply Rooted: As a Dubois native, Dr. Joan loves our community and is so proud to bring her specialized practice back home to the heart of Dubois County!"

Driven by Passion: She takes immense pride in this specialized field. Even though developmental optometry is often "new" to people, she loves providing life-changing care that goes way beyond 20/20.

She truly loves what she does and is honored to lead a team that helps our community see and live better every day! ✨
