WE NEED YOUR VOICE NOW...Help Move SB 878 Forward!!

It takes less than a minute—use MPA’s prewritten letter to contact your legislators NOW about SB 878

One important part of the bill clarifies the use of CLIA-waived tests in pharmacies. These are simple, rapid tests—such as those used for influenza, strep, and COVID-19—that can safely be performed in healthcare settings with a low risk of incorrect results. In pharmacies, these tests typically involve a quick swab and provide results within minutes, allowing pharmacists to help patients get answers quickly and guide them toward appropriate treatment or referral when necessary.

This legislation is not intended to replace physicians. Pharmacists want to continue working collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. SB 878 simply helps ensure patients can access timely care and appropriate guidance when they need it.

In many cases, allowing pharmacists to provide these services can also help reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and healthcare costs by giving patients faster access to basic testing, guidance, and care in their local community.

The bill also improves patient access to certain medical devices such as test strips, pen needles, and spacers, which help patients manage conditions like diabetes and asthma more effectively.

Your voice can make a difference in helping legislators understand how this bill supports patient access and modern pharmacy care.

Senate Bill 878 has been added to the Senate calendar for perfection. On Thursday, Representative State Representative Bennie Cook filed HB 3499, a companion bill to Senate Bill 878. This bill has the same language as SB 878 and would expand the scope of pharmacy practice by allowing Pharmacists to provide services for influenza, group A streptococcus, and COVID-19. It would also permit pharmacists to prescribe certain types of medical equipment based on FDA classifications and the approval of the Board of Healing Arts and Board of Pharmacy.

Celebrating 140 years of serving Pharmacists

In September of 1879, the Missouri Pharmacy Association was established. Since then, the association has worked tirelessly for all pharmacists across the state, ensuring that they remain the medication experts in patient care relationships.

Today, we continue to keep our eyes on that goal. Everything we do at the MPA revolves around moving the profession of pharmacy forward, as directed by our leadership team and membership. We hope you join us in this mission!
