Phil Freeman has dedicated his life to both Freeman Mortuary and the Jefferson City community — and this year marks more than five decades of that commitment. 🎊

A second-generation funeral director, Phil joined Freeman Mortuary in 1974 after graduating with honors from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. But his impact extends far beyond the funeral home.

Phil has served as president of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the YMCA, and the Capital Region Medical Center Foundation. He spent nine years on the Jefferson City Board of Education, including two terms as president. He's led fundraising efforts for everything from Adkins Stadium renovations to the Miller Performing Arts Center, and currently serves as chairman of the Old Town Redevelopment Board.

His dedication hasn't gone unnoticed — Phil received the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1981 and the Chamber of Commerce Meritorious Civic Service Award in 2002. Thank you for all you have done for your community!

Not sure where to begin? Here are five caring ways to start:

1. Use someone else's story. A movie, a news story, or a friend's experience can open the door naturally.
2. Start with your own wishes. Lead by example: "I've been thinking about what I'd want someday..."
3. Frame it as a gift, not a burden. Sharing your wishes gives your family peace of mind.
4. Keep it casual. Some of the best conversations happen on a walk, over coffee, or during a long car ride.
5. Break it into smaller conversations. You don't have to cover everything at once. Start with one topic and build from there.

The goal isn't to have all the answers. It's just to start.
