Did you know? Most children with complex needs have very low Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D isn’t just about strong bones—it’s a powerful player in:

•Immune health (helps fight infections and regulate inflammation)
•Brain function (supports mood, focus, and development)
•Muscle strength (keeps kids active and moving well)
•Genetic expression (turns critical healing pathways on and off)

For complex kids, low Vitamin D can mean more frequent illness, tougher recoveries, and challenges with mood or behavior. That’s why we always check—and correct—Vitamin D levels as part of our functional approach.

👉 When the body has the nutrients it needs, kids feel better and behave better!

🧩 Gut health matters more than you think in autism.

Research shows that about 40% of kids with autism have obvious gut problems—constipation, diarrhea, reflux, and bloating. But here’s what most families don’t realize: many others have hidden gut issues that don’t show up as clearly, and often these are the kids with the most extreme symptoms.

That’s why at Covenant, we don’t guess—we test.

By identifying bacterial imbalances, yeast overgrowth, or nutrient absorption issues, we can connect the dots between the gut and the brain. Healing the gut often means easing behaviors, sleep issues, anxiety, and more.

Because every child deserves to feel their best—inside and out.

“He Forgot How to Write”: The Loss of Academic Skills in PANS & PANDAS

One day, your child is doing long division and writing full paragraphs. Next, they can’t hold a pencil. They stare blankly at a math problem they solved last week. Their thoughts seem jumbled. Homework ends in tears—or flat refusal.

For many parents, this dramatic loss of academic skills comes out of nowhere. And too often, it’s mistaken for laziness, defiance, or even ADHD.

But in reality? It’s not laziness—it’s inflammation. And in kids with PANS or PANDAS, it’s a major red flag.

🚨 Silencing the alarm is not the same as putting out the fire.
When kids show symptoms—anxiety, tics, sleep struggles, gut issues—conventional medicine often tries to “quiet the alarm” with band-aid solutions like meds that suppress symptoms. But the alarm is there for a reason: it’s telling us there’s a fire burning underneath. 🔥

At Covenant, we believe the why matters.
✨ Why is your child’s immune system on overdrive?
✨ Why is their gut inflamed?
✨ Why are their labs out of balance?

By uncovering the root causes—whether it’s infections, nutrient deficiencies, mitochondrial dysfunction, or toxins—we don’t just quiet the alarm. We put out the fire.

Because the WHY matters!

🦠 COVID-19 and PANS/PANDAS: What Parents Should Know

One of the most challenging things about COVID-19 is that it doesn’t just cause new illness—it can also reactivate old infections and exposures hidden in the body.

For kids already vulnerable to neuroimmune conditions like PANS and PANDAS, this reactivation can act as a major trigger. We’ve seen:

•Flares of OCD, anxiety, and mood swings
•Sleep disruption and fatigue
•Return of old infections (strep, mycoplasma, EBV, Lyme, mold-related illness)
•Increased inflammation in the brain

This is why many families notice sudden regressions or new symptoms in their child after COVID—even if the illness itself seemed “mild.”

If you notice a new onset of symptoms in your child, particularly after an exposure to an illness or a frank infection, talk to your provider about running updated labs to check for high strep and viral loads. The faster we intervene, the faster kids get better!

“Why is my child always congested?” 🤔

It’s easy to blame allergies, but chronic nasal congestion can also mean:

•Imbalanced sinus bacteria
•Oral restrictions like tongue or lip ties

You don’t have to settle for “always congested.” With the right support, kids can breathe easier—and feel better.

Lending Hope - One Family at a Time

Dr. Sonia McGowin, DC is a Chiropractor and DAN! doctor, practicing in Jefferson City, Missouri. The focus of her practice is children with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities to autism. She uses a biomedical and nutritional approach to treating their specific issues. Dr. McGowin is a graduate of Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City and lives in Jefferson City with her husband, two children, and their English Bulldog, Lola. Before becoming a Chiropractor, she was the Deputy Director of Outreach Services for the Judevine Center for Autism (now called Easter Seals Midwest), working with families with autism across 92 counties of Missouri for 14 years. It was after attending a DAN! conference in 2001 when she realized that autism is medical, and decided to become a DAN! doctor. Dr. Sonia has spent her career working with children and adults with autism, but she's also a parent of a child with unique needs. As a toddler, her son displayed many troubling issues, such as a severe speech delay, self-injurious and aggressive behaviors; traditional medicine offered no hope or help for her family. After undertaking biomedical intervention, he is now highly verbal and very talented, yet still dealing with food allergies and learning disabilities. After the experience with her son, she vowed that no family should feel alone in their quest to recover their child. These experiences, along with her training as a DAN! doctor, give Dr McGowin a unique skillset to offer interventions working toward the treatment of children with disabilities on any range of the spectrum. She uses a variety of approaches including lab testing, chiropractic, supplements, food allergy and sensitivity testing, essential oils, as well as the IonCleanse by AMD. She is sought after among many groups on social media, and has worked with patients from more than half a dozen states, other countries and from all parts of her home state of Missouri. Dr. Sonia McGowin offers her professional opinion in overview format to multiple audiences. She is a contributing writer for the Missouri Autism Report magazine. She was a presenter at the AutismOne 2016 Conference sharing "Detoxifying Across Barriers: Harnessing the Power of Ions". She relishes opportunities to share her expertise in the use of nutrition, essential oils, detoxification and other remedies addressing interventions for individuals with Autism and other neurodevelopmental challenges. In May 2017, Dr. McGowin started her own practice dedicated to her dream of supporting children with disabilities and their families. Her office is located in Jefferson City, Missouri, yet she consults with patients all over the world via phone and Zoom video conference. She welcomes patients who are close enough to come and visit her in her office. In addition, she has held one day regional clinics in Denver, Colorado; Springfield, Missouri; Cape Girardeau, MIssouri; and hope to expand to some other areas in the coming year. You will not find a practitioner who is more committed, engaged and educated as Dr. Sonia McGowin. You will find her compassion is relentless in the pursuit of helping children everywhere recover from vaccine injuries. Her down to earth and practical approach to supporting kids and their families is a welcome change from the typical medical professionals we deal with each day. She is approachable and easy to talk to and unassuming in her patient manner. If you are interested in meeting with Dr. Sonia please contact her Covenant Integrative Wellness offices at the contact information listed on this page and begin the next phase of your journey started.
