Mental Health for Missouri's Veterans and Families This site is designed for both clinicians and the military community (service members, veterans and their families).

The Missouri Department of Mental Health's Veterans Services is committed to addressing behavioral health needs of Service Members, Veterans and their families. We look to reduce the stigma for seeking assistance with mental illness and substance use disorders and provide people with information/resources on a wide range of behavioral health topics from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Suicide Prevention, Military Sexual Trauma and more. This site will also promote training to assist clinicians who want to work with service members, veterans and their families and provide professional development resources. The DMH Service Members, Veterans and their Families page are an open forum where anyone with an interest in behavioral health issues may inquire or express responsible, respectful opinions. Information shared here is considered public. To ensure that this page remains a place where everyone feels welcome, we have a few rules. We will remove comments that contain the following:

•Personal attacks or insults
•Political candidate endorsements or issues unrelated to behavioral health
•Unauthorized advertisements or solicitations
•Comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity

Does asking someone about su***de put the idea in their head?

No. Studies have shown that asking people about suicidal thoughts and behaviors does not cause or increase such thoughts. Asking someone directly, “Are you thinking about su***de?” can be the best way to identify someone at risk for su***de.

Asking the question about su***de can let the person know that you see them and that you care. Talking can give them a chance to share openly about the stressors in their life that are causing them to be at risk.
Reach out today and conduct a Buddy Check. If you notice any warning signs of su***de, ask the question. It may help save a life.
