Learn the fine points of self-direction and how it gives individuals and families the power and flexibility to choose the services they desire, the staff that works with them, and create a schedule that suits the person’s needs.

Through self-direction, many of our group services may also be reimbursable, making it easier for families to access the support their child needs while maximizing available funding. This flexibility allows you to build a program that not only fits your goals but is also financially sustainable.

Sharing to Support a Future SLP!
My name is Josh Valentine, and I am a senior Speech-Language-
Hearing Sciences student at Loyola University Maryland. I am conducting a research study to better understand how children with developmental disabilities use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems within their daily routines. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Loyola University Maryland.

We are looking for parents or guardians of children (ages 0–21) with developmental disabilities who use a personal aided AAC system and are currently enrolled in a therapy program (e.g., speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, etc.). Participation would include a 15-minute intake survey and a 1-hour interview with the parent/caregiver via Zoom.

Self-Direction: An Overview

Learn about OPWDD’s self-direction services, which allow for more choice in OPWDD-funded supports and services. The individual must be eligible for OPWDD services and participating in Care Management services through a Care Coordination Organization (CCO) to be approved for self-direction. Therefore, it is recommended that you first attend a workshop on OPWDD eligibility if the person with the disability does not already have it.
