One of the most common questions we get asked is what opportunities are available for students. We're fortunate to be able to help students explore the many aspects of healthcare through volunteer opportunities, Camp Med, job shadowing, internships and externships, among others. Through our partnership with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at Ashe County High School, we have students complete semester-long internships where they learn valuable skills and insight into a chosen career pathway.

This semester, we have seven student interns, including senior Molly Maine who has been interning in our labor and delivery department. Molly shared more about her experience and how the Health Science Career Pathway has prepared her for the future.

Thank you to Ashe County Early College CTE teacher Stefan Kunz and his students Madalyn Blevins and Hailey Miller for putting this video together for us!

Join us for our annual Heart of a Husky event on Friday, May 15, at Ashe County High School! This is a FREE event for all middle and high school student-athletes. All student-athletes are required to have a physical and EKG on file in order to play, so be sure to take advantage of this awesome event!

Current high school students can pick up their paperwork from Coach Hampton. Middle school students should see Mr. Mash and current 6th grades should contact their elementary school nurse. Time slots will be assigned once all paperwork has been turned in.

Thank you to Ashe County Public Schools, Blue Ridge Energy and Ashe Medics, Inc for helping sponsor this event!! We look forward to seeing all of our student-athletes there!

We never know what is going to come through the door of the emergency department. On Saturday, we participated in an annual county-wide Disaster Drill. While we hope that an event like this never happens, mock scenarios and disaster drills allow our team members to implement our policies and procedures in real-time to ensure we are fully prepared should the need arise. Thank you to the ED team, AMH police and our department leaders for helping make this a successful training exercise.

β€œCancer doesn't care about zip codes β€” and neither should access to exceptional treatment,” said Dr. Ayla Kessler, Medical Director for Ashe Oncology and Hematology. β€œNearly all of us know someone who has faced this disease: a parent, a neighbor, a friend. When that diagnosis comes, patients shouldn't have to travel hours from home during the most challenging moments of their lives.

β€œThe expansion of the Jo Anne Poe Cancer Center will create more patient-centered infusion spaces, improve access to advanced therapies, and ensure families can receive world-class care close to home β€” surrounded by the people who love them and the community that knows their name,” Dr. Kessler added. β€œThis project is more than a renovation. It's a promise that when our neighbors face their toughest days, they won't face them far from home. Join us on May 30 as we come together to build something extraordinary for the patients and families who need it most. Thank you for showing up β€” not just for this event, but for each other, every day.”

We hope you will join us for our Enchanted Evening Gala on Saturday, May 30, at Jefferson Landing Club to benefit the expansion of the Jo Anne Poe Cancer Center!
