Allow me to introduce myself, I am Susan Barrett wife to a wonderful husband, mother to 3 boys and grandmother to 4 precious little ones. Back in late 2005, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Praise the Lord I have overcome that obstacle in my life. While going through all of that I was forced to quit work and was a single mother of 2 boys. It was a daily struggle, but the Lord blessed me with
some amazing people. Needless to say, my worries of no Christmas for my boys, no food to feed them and no utilities were washed away by the help and graciousness of the people the Lord put into my life. During this time, I was having to go up to UAB Hospital every week. It never failed; I would see at least 3 homeless people going without the things that most take for granted. During this time in my life, I knew I had to make a difference, however I was still financially unable to help much. A few years back I lived in Pelham, AL and went to an amazing church. The church would often reach out to the homeless and less fortunate. They would even go to the missions and serve food and take donations. Again, the desire to help others was more intense, the fire was burning within me. In 2014, my family and I moved back to the home we had since 2001 in Chilton County. As we got situated and settled in I told my husband it was time to make a change and start helping others, even though we didn't have much either. I told him we had tons more than most and it was time to give back. In November 2015 I founded Our Helping Hands of Bama. Our Helping Hands of Bama is a non-profit organization that offered help to the homeless, elderly, those affected by domestic violence and natural disasters. Unfortunately due to an automobile accident, it broke my heart but I had to shut the doors to OHHOB. On January 1, 2022, I decided to open the doors back up. However, this time things are a little different. Do to still not have another truck we are limited to what we can do but that won't stop us. This time we are focusing more on our community of Chilton County. OHHOB is dedicated to helping families in need. We will be hosting a few events for our community children (ex" Back Pack give a ways), as well as helping with food boxes.
