This is me doing a newborn exam! What am I doing exactly with my hand here? I have zero idea. 😆😆 what I can say is…

We wait a good while after the birth to take care of things like the newborn exam. We give you a ton of time to get to know your new baby! When we do the exam, it’s on the bed with you watching and me explaining exactly what I’m doing and why. (Except this particular move, lol) We take the exam at baby’s pace and keep them covered as much as possible to keep them warm and comfy! We use both high tech equipment, like a pulse oximeter, and low tech tools, like a hanging scale/sling, to give your baby a thorough look over and assessment!

Also, licensed midwives are state registrars of birth certificates, so we personally make sure you get both a birth certificate and social security card. Sometimes, I feel like that’s mostly why people hire me 😆

Off call for a few days came just in time for our first freeze.

Last of the summer harvest. Sweet and hot peppers. A few cherry tomatoes. Lemon verbena, lemon grass and Thai basil into the dehydrator.

Last day of the summer garden is always a day with big feelings. The air is crisp. The light is filtered. Winter is coming.

But I’m so happy to be in Louisiana where cool weather herbs are coming back to life, and I know I can still plants some winter greens and radishes. After I let the goats in to clean up a bit 😆😆

Love this!

At 35 weeks pregnant, Ilsa Feierabend isn’t slowing down, she’s speeding up!🤰

The Oregon Masters swimmer won the 800m free and followed up with a 2nd place finish in the 200m back today.

Swimming through pregnancy isn’t new for Ilsa. During her first, she made it to swim practice the morning she went into labor!

Fresh off a busy open water season (including the 11-mile Portland Bridge Swim, a 10k in southern OR, and multiple 5k and 1500m races), her win in the 800 felt “pretty easy” in comparison.

After stepping away from the sport for 7 years post-college, joining her Masters team reignited her love for swimming. Now, it’s not just about racing, it’s about the friendships, community, and joy of doing what she loves.

This is what it looks like when a parent is fully supported during their feeding journey.

In a powerful display of resilience and determination, Stephanie Case (), a Canadian human rights lawyer, won the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia 100K ultramarathon in Wales. Just six months after giving birth, she completed the grueling race in under 17 hours, pausing at aid stations to breastfeed her infant daughter. Case’s victory not only marks a personal achievement but also serves as an inspiring testament to the strength and capabilities of postpartum women.

“She may be crying “I girl bossed too close to the sun” before it’s all over. But isn’t that what we all say before we succeed?”

"Midwifery models of care are models of care in which the main care providers for women and newborns, starting from pre-pregnancy and continuing all the way through the postnatal period, are educated, licensed, regulated midwives who autonomously provide and coordinate respectful, high- quality care across their full scope of practice, using an approach that is aligned with the midwifery philosophy of care, which:

i. promotes a person-centred approach to care;
ii. values the woman–midwife relationship and partnership;
iii. optimizes physiological, biological, psychological, social and cultural processes; and iv. uses interventions only when indicated.
In midwifery models of care, midwives provide integrated care, addressing the needs of each individual woman and newborn, within functional and enabling health systems, equipped with necessary resources and streamlined consultation and referral processes. They collaborate within networks of care as part of interdisciplinary teams characterized by equality, trust and respect. This approach guarantees that every woman and newborn receives personalized care, tailored to their health needs.

Midwifery models of care are adaptable to all levels of care and contexts, including home-, community- and hospital-based settings; the public and private sectors and public–private partnerships; resource-constrained environments; and humanitarian and crisis settings. This ensures wide accessibility, equity and relevance across different cultural contexts for women, newborns, partners, families and communities."

I could literally tell my husband, “By the way, this baby is being born here at home.” 😆😆

If your husband is not supportive of your homebirth, let me have a crack at him ✌️
