As part of the Central Louisiana AHEC Medstart program, Dustin Decker, MHA, RRT, and Lori Stevenson, RRT, met with eighth-grade students at Fellowship Elementary School to discuss the rewarding career of respiratory therapy. They shared that the field is growing rapidly in our area, with a high local demand for new therapists to join the workforce. Students learned about the wide variety of work environments available to them, including inpatient care, pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep laboratories, and specialized units for neonatal and pediatric care.
Students were shown how to insert an artificial airway and were each given an incentive spirometer to demonstrate the importance of lung expansion therapy.
We truly enjoyed meeting with these students and seeing their interest in healthcare. It was a pleasure to share what we do with such a great group of young people.
