Community Health in Action: Manor College at the Byrd Cancer Expo

As part of their Community Dentistry class project, Manor College Dental Hygiene students successfully delivered a oral health initiative at the annual Byrd Cancer Foundation Wellness and Cancer Expo.

While the program was expertly coordinated by a team of three lead students (Tamia, Alexandra , and Jocelyn ) —who managed the population research, program development, and data evaluation—the entire class participated to provide over 30 oral cancer screenings to community members.

The initiative focused on the critical role of oral health throughout the cancer journey:
*Prevention: Early detection through clinical screenings.
*During Treatment: Practical strategies for managing oral complications.
*Post-Treatment: Maintaining long-term wellness after recovery.

By evaluating the delivery and community feedback, these students gained invaluable experience in public health advocacy and the life-saving importance of dental integration in oncology care.

Congratulations to Stephanie Parker, Director of our Dental Hygiene Program, who was awarded the degree Doctor of Health Sciences from Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Parker successfully defended her doctoral research dissertation yesterday afternoon.

Dr. Parker's final research project was entitled "Dental Hygiene Alumni Descriptions of Clinical Education Experiences in Relation to Clinical Faculty Status." Her Sophomore students attended the research presentation at Thomas Jefferson and are pictured below with Dr. Parker after her successful defense.

There are seats remaining in the Expanded Functions Dental Assisting Associates Degree Program for Fall 2026. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity now to become another integral part of the dental professional team.
