Babies who have dry irritated skin may develop eczema (itchy, scaly patches of skin). Eczema is a skin condition that is commonly seen in kids who also end up with food allergies, nasal allergies, and/or asthma.

When a food allergen, like peanut, egg, or milk, touches a baby’s cracked or open and inflamed skin, their immune system might see the food as an invader and trigger an allergic response. Scientists think this may help explain why some children develop food allergies.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) happens when there is too much of a type of white blood cell, called eosinophils, in the esophagus. This causes inflammation and damage which makes swallowing difficult and even painful.

People with EoE often have other allergic diseases like asthma, eczema, or food and environmental allergies. There are treatments that can help manage EoE.

Breastfeeding Aversion Response (BAR) is a feeling of aversion that occurs during the entire duration that the child is latched (translation: mothers report that breastfeeding is exhausting or sickening, or that they feel “touched out,” angry, anxious, violated, guilty, or disconnected). This feeling is different from Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER), which involves sudden, intense negative emotions during the milk letdown. For D-MER, negative feelings only occur during letdown and the Breastfeeding Aversion Response occurs during the entire breastfeeding session.

A recent study reported the results of a survey of over 5,000 women in Australia and found that one in five women reported Breastfeeding Aversion Response. Most women (96%) who experienced breastfeeding aversion also reported challenges with breastfeeding. Yet, 82.5% of women who experience Breastfeeding Aversion Response indicated that their overall breastfeeding experience was positive (rating it as “good” or “very good”).

Eating out at a restaurant can still be both a healthy and enjoyable experience as many of them are including more plant-based options on their menus. Whether you choose a vegetarian option or a favorite meal with an added side salad, eating out does not mean you have to sacrifice your healthy eating goals.

Consider these tips when you are pregnant or breastfeeding:

1️⃣ Eat a variety of healthy foods: It’s important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. Choose options for meals, beverages, and snacks that have limited added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium (salt).

2️⃣ Get your Plan: Calorie and nutrient needs are different during pregnancy and when you are breastfeeding. Get your MyPlate Plan at MyPlate.gov to learn your estimated calorie needs and how to meet your food group goals

3️⃣ Make smart seafood choices: Eating seafood during pregnancy may benefit your baby’s growth and is a healthy protein source for you during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Choose options lower in methylmercury, like cod, salmon, or tilapia.

4️⃣ Ask about supplements: In addition to a healthy diet, your doctor may recommend a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement to help you meet your needs. After pregnancy, your doctor may recommend switching from a prenatal to a multivitamin supplement during breastfeeding.

5️⃣ Keep food safe: You and your baby are at higher risk for foodborne illness. Only eat foods that have been cooked to the proper temperature and avoid unpasteurized (raw) milk or juice, raw sprouts, unwashed produce, cold deli meats, or soft cheese made from unpasteurized milk.

6️⃣ Avoid all alcohol: Pregnant women and women who may become pregnant should not drink any alcohol. Talk with your doctor before considering drinking alcohol while you are breastfeeding.

Someone you love now has a baby? They need your help.

Remember: Babies should sleep on their back, in a crib or pack & play, with nothing but baby every sleep. Safe sleep is hard. And they're exhausted—it's even harder.

So here's where you come in! Don't wait for an invite. Just hold the baby. Just change a diaper. Just showing up could be a lifesaver.

🔋 Keep Button Batteries Out of Reach! 🔋

Button batteries can be found in everyday items, but they pose a serious danger if swallowed. Make sure to store them safely:

1️⃣ Keep them in high, locked cabinets. 2️⃣ Store in childproof containers. 3️⃣ Avoid leaving devices with accessible batteries where kids can reach.

Prevention is key to keeping your little ones safe from these hidden hazards! ⚠️👶
