Sun of Awareness Sangha - Mindfulness Group We are a friendly group in Downtown Jersey City that gathers weekly for mindfulness meditation (sitting and walking), shared readings and dharma sharing.

We are a friendly meditation group in Jersey City. We practice mindfulness meditation in the tradition of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. We also explore the wisdom from other wonderful teachers, such as Pema Chodron and Jon Kabat-Zinn. We gather on Sunday mornings from 9am-10:30am - currently on Zoom during the COVID pandemic. We expect to resume in-person gatherings before long at a location to be announced. Please arrive a little early, so we can begin on time! Our practice usually involves a silent or guided sitting meditation, a walking meditation, a reading and dharma sharing, and one final sitting meditation. All are welcome - including beginners - regardless of experience or affiliation. There is no fee to participate. Questions? Contact:

"One autumn day, I was in a park, absorbed in the contemplation of a very small, beautiful leaf, shaped like a heart. Its color was almost red, and it was barely hanging on the branch, nearly ready to fall down. I spent a long time with it, and I asked the leaf a number of questions. I found out the leaf had been a mother to the tree…

"I asked the leaf whether it was frightened because it was autumn and the other leaves were falling. The leaf told me, “No. During the whole spring and summer I was completely alive. I worked hard to help nourish the tree, and now much of me is in the tree. I am not limited by this form. I am also the whole tree, and when I go back to the soil, I will continue to nourish the tree. As I leave this branch and float to the ground, I will wave to the tree and tell her, ‘I will see you again very soon.’”

Our Story

We are a friendly mindfulness practice group in Jersey City, founded in 2009. Note that in Pali and Sanskrit, “sangha” means “community.” We practice mindfulness meditation in the tradition of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. We also explore the wisdom from other wonderful teachers, such as Pema Chodron, Ram Dass, and Jon Kabat-Zinn. We gather on Sunday mornings from 9am-10:30am at Yoga Shunya. The studio is located at 275 Grove Street - across the street from City Hall - on the third floor. To get in, enter the double doors on the left side of RAZZA and then go up the stairs.

Yoga Shunya is three short blocks south from the GROVE ST PATH station. Please arrive a little early, so we can begin on time! Our practice usually involves a silent or guided sitting meditation, a walking meditation, a reading and dharma sharing, and one final sitting meditation. All are welcome - including beginners - regardless of experience or affiliation. Thanks to the generosity of Yoga Shunya, the practice is free of charge; we do encourage participants to donate $5-10 to the studio for their beneficence. We have cushions, mats, and chairs.
