About Us
In 1950, Henry L. Ferguson of Ferguson Funeral Home (Jersey City) began to train his nephew, Herbert Alexander Jackson in the practice of Mortuary Science. In 1960, Herb Jackson purchased 384 Communipaw Avenue (Jersey City) and established the Jackson Funeral Residence, Inc. That same year Herb married Audrey E. Dillard, a native of Perth Amboy, NJ. Together they traveled the world extensively. The love that was shared between the two of them was indeed a beautiful one, a love that lasted for over 40 years. Audrey, an astute woman of class always had a desire to learn. Mrs. J., as she is fondly referred by friends, enrolled at Farleigh Dickenson University receiving a degree in Business Administration and graduating Summa cm Laude. She matriculated to the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service where Herb had also graduated from and taught. Audrey earned a degree in Funeral Service. For several years, she worked side by side with her husband at Jackson Funeral Residence, assisting families during their time of bereavement. Unfortunately in 1985 Herbert A. Jackson suffered a near fatal stroke that left him partially paralyzed. In the tradition of so many strong black renaissance women she took the helm and continued to carry the business to the next level. A multi-talented individual, Audrey operated the business and cared for her devoted husband.
On January 31, 2003 after a long illness, Herbert Alexander Jackson departed this life. Audrey soon thereafter retired from funeral service on a daily basis; however, she continued to counsel her daughter Rosalyn A. Browne and the entire staff of the Jackson Funeral Residence in the practice in which she so excelled. Rosalyn continued in the legacy of her parents, successfully operating and developing the business for several years. On June 30, 2012 after a long illness, Audrey E. Jackson departed this life. On March 14, 2019 after nearly 20 years of management, Rosalyn Browne retired from funeral service and ceased operations. For nearly 60 years on Communipaw Avenue, the Jackson Funeral Residence assisted bereaved families during their time of need. Mindful of the legacy of her parents and the need to keep positive black owned business in our community, Rosalyn allowed long time faithful and trusted employees Sidney M. Hagans and Craig J. Thomas to continue in the legacy of Herbert A. Jackson; providing first class, top shelf service to all who entrust their loved ones to them. On July 22, 2019 Jackson Funeral Residence of Jersey City, LLC received registration from the N.J. State Mortuary Board and officially opened it’s doors to the community.
