Su***de Prevention for Men
Su***de is a significant global public health issue, with over 720,000 deaths annually, and 73% occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Men are disproportionately affected, with global su***de rates more than twice as high for men (12.3 per 100,000) compared to women (5.6 per 100,000) as of 2021. In many countries, the male-to-female ratio is 3-4 times higher, driven by factors like untreated mental health conditions, higher lethality in attempts (e.g., via fi****ms), impulsivity, alcohol use, social isolation, and stigma around seeking help. Over half of all su***des occur before age 50, and men often have contact with primary care in the year prior but go untreated. Addressing this requires tailored, evidence-based approaches that account for men’s unique barriers, such as reluctance to engage in traditional therapy and preferences for action-oriented support.

Today’s evidence is about treating short-term bipolar depression (the “down” phase of bipolar disorder) using mood stabilizers like lithium or certain anti-seizure medicines. Researchers reviewed 18 high-quality studies with over 4,000 people and found that taking a mood stabilizer alone helps more people feel better compared to a fake pill (placebo).
• About 30% more people showed improvement (like fewer symptoms) with the medicine. This means if we treat 10 people, 1 extra person gets better who wouldn’t have with just a placebo.
• About 50% more people reached full recovery (remission). So, for every 8 people treated, 1 extra fully recovers compared to placebo.
Adding an antidepressant to the mood stabilizer didn’t make things better overall, and there weren’t big differences in side effects like gaining weight, flipping to a “high” mood (mania), or risks like su***de. This suggests mood stabilizers can be a good option on their own for bipolar depression, but more long-term studies are needed since many people stop treatment early.

Su***de rates highlight a stark concern: Men die by su***de at four times the rate of women (79% of U.S. su***des are men), with the highest rates among Caucasian men over 85. This contributes to mental health disorders being a leading cause of death for men under 50 in many countries.
