Opioid overdoses can happen to anyone. Elderly persons prescribed an opioid who forgets that they have taken their dose, and takes another, a child who accidentally consumed medications in a home, not just those with substance use disorder.

Carrying Narcan (naloxone) gives you the power to reverse an opioid overdose and save a life. It’s safe, easy to use, and an important part of compassionate care.

📍 Where to Get Narcan Locally in Jersey County, IL during normal business hours:
* Jersey County Health Dept
* Public libraries in Jersey County and across Illinois are now required to stock naloxone and have trained staff
* Koen Counseling and Wellness Center
*Salvation Army
*Got Faith
*Plaza Cleaners

& More locations are in the works.

When we come together as a community, we save lives and strengthen pathways to recovery. Harm reduction—like carrying Narcan (naloxone)—is one way we show up for one another with compassion and care.

❄️ Snow Shoveling Safety Advisory ❄️

With significant snowfall expected this weekend, JCHD reminds residents that snow shoveling can place serious strain on the heart—especially in cold temperatures. Heavy lifting combined with cold air can cause sudden increases in heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of a heart attack.

This risk is higher for adults over age 55, individuals who are physically inactive, and those with heart disease or other chronic health conditions.

To reduce your risk while shoveling snow:
• Take frequent breaks and pace yourself
• Push snow instead of lift
• Dress in layers and stay hydrated
• Use a smaller shovel or a snowblower if available
• Ask for help if you are at higher risk

Stop shoveling and call 911 immediately if you or someone else experiences:
• Chest pain or pressure
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Nausea or pain in the arm, neck, jaw, or back

Your health and safety are important. Take precautions, know your limits, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨
Use the File of Life—It Could Save Your Life

In an emergency, first responders need quick access to your medical information. The File of Life keeps critical details—such as medical conditions, medications, allergies, and emergency contacts—in a clearly marked location, typically on your refrigerator, where responders are trained to look.

If you’re unable to speak or your phone isn’t accessible, a completed File of Life helps responders make faster, safer medical decisions and contact loved ones quickly.

👥 File of Life is recommended for:
• Seniors
• Individuals with medical conditions
• Those taking prescription medications
• People living alone

📌 How to use it:
✔️ Complete the form
✔️ Place it in the magnet
✔️ Store it on your refrigerator
✔️ Update it as needed

📍 Free File of Life forms are available by contacting:
JCH Ambulance, Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, Jerseyville Police Department, and Jersey County Health Department.
