🦃 The best part of a holiday meal? The leftovers!

Make sure to store them safely:

✅ Refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours of serving.
✅ Use shallow containers so food cools quickly.
✅ Eat leftovers within 3–4 days or freeze for later.
🔥 Reheat leftovers to an internal temperature of 165°F before eating.
❗ When in doubt—throw it out!

🍗 Cook It Right — Use a Food Thermometer! 🌡️
You can’t always tell if food is safely cooked just by looking at it.
A food thermometer is the only way to make sure your meal reaches a safe internal temperature!

💡 Why use a thermometer?
✔ Prevent foodborne illness
✔ Make sure food is fully cooked
✔ Keep your family safe this holiday season

Safe Internal Temperatures:

Poultry (whole or ground): 165°F
Ground meats (beef, pork, turkey): 160°F
Beef, pork, veal, lamb (steaks, roasts, chops): 145°F + 3 mins rest
Leftovers & casseroles: 165°F

👉 Use a thermometer every time you cook!
Keeping food safe is the best ingredient in any recipe. 🧡

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) is committed to transparency and to keeping Illinois families informed as the federal shutdown continues.

Despite the lack of a federal budget or continuing resolution, Illinois Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is funded to operate throughout November.

Participants should continue to come to WIC appointments, shop and redeem benefits as usual.

🚫 Why Bare-Hand Contact Is Not Allowed:
Even if your hands look clean, they can still carry germs like:
1. Norovirus 2. Hepatitis A 3. Staphylococcus aureus 4. E. coli

These can transfer easily from your skin to food — especially RTE foods (like sandwiches, salads, fruit, or bakery items) that won’t be cooked again to kill bacteria.

So when you are advertising your delicious food like your sandwiches, ice cream cones, baked goods etc. on social media, make sure your staff is following safe handling techniques by using gloves, utensils, or deli tissue.
