The same laws that govern the growth of plants oversee our own internal and external changes. We observe, consider, work, and wonder, tilling the soil of our lives, planting seeds, and tending them. Sometimes the hard part is knowing when to stop and let go, handing it over to the universe. Usually this happens by way of distraction or disruption. Our attention is called away to other more pressing concerns. And it is often at these times, when we are not looking, in the silence of nature’s embrace, that the miracle of change happens.

Confronting our feelings and giving them appropriate expression, always takes strength, not weakness. It takes strength to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring and to channel them into nonviolent outlets. It takes strength to face our sadness and to grieve, and to let our grief and our anger flow into tears when they need to. It takes strength to talk about our feelings and to reach out for help and comfort when we need it.

Some days, doing “the best we can” may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn’t perfect-on any front- and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.

December 19

The world is our reflection.

Some believe that in order to change the world, all we have to do is think more positively about it and visualize the change we desire. Visualization and affirmation are powerful tools, to be sure, but there is more to it than that.

If the world is our mirror, then whatever we see out there in someway reflects what is in us. We need to take responsibility for it and be willing to transform it within ourselves if we want to see change in the world.

I take responsibility for my elder world by taking responsibility for my inner world. ~Shakti Gawain Reflections in the Light.

December 17

Individual change affects the collective consciousness.

Every individual consciousness is a part of the collective consciousness. When a small but significant number of individuals have moved into a new level of awareness and truly changed their beliefs and their behaviors, the changes felt in the entire collective consciousness. Every other individual is then moved in the direction of that change. The whole process may have started with one individual making the first leap.

“As I transform the world is transformed.“
~Shakti Gawain, Relflections in the Light.

“My inner feelings boil down to a handful of things – fear, anger, self-pity, shame, and feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. These are the things we need to talk about in AA.”
