I am thrilled to introduce my TMJ Therapy program!! I continue to take courses and training to expand my knowledge to better take care of clients and their concerns.

TMJ dysfunction, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, is a condition that affects the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. This disorder can cause pain and discomfort, making basic activities like chewing, speaking, and even yawning challenging. Symptoms may include jaw pain, headaches, neck pain, earaches, and clicking or popping sounds in the jaw.

I introduce specific muscle release techniques around the TMJ and inside the mouth. These techniques in combination with myofunctional exercises can help reduce symptoms and improve muscle function.

Do you find yourself or your child clenching or grinding? Here’s a great explanation of why that happens. When the tongue is resting in the floor of the mouth. It can fall back into throat while sleeping. Hence, the airway is getting blocked! Working with a myofunctional therapist can help to improve proper tongue posture. Which means, having the tongue rest in the roof of the mouth!! Reducing the risk of the tongue falling back and cutting off the airway.

Did you know your tongue is connected all the way to your toes by fascia? If your tongue is not functioning properly, it can affect many other parts of your body! Myofunctional therapy is a multidisciplinary approach to holistic care. It’s not just about improving one area of your body. It all works together with the help of other providers.

This is interesting..🤔🧐

From birth, your tongue is actually connected to your toes through an intricate network of connective tissue known as fascia.

If your tongue is not resting correctly in your mouth due to mouth breathing, things can get out of alignment in your mouth and the rest of your body.
Tongue posture can lead to a foot imbalance and vice versa because the tongue guides all myofascial continuity structures that run from the inner arch of the foot up through the middle of the body to the tongue and jaw muscles.

When the tongue sits on top of the palate, it seals the oral cavity and holds the throat open like a tent. These muscles support the neck, keep your posture straight, help you breathe, and maintain your posture upright.
Your tongue also acts as a rudder and support system through a fascial line, and when the tongue is down, we breathe through our mouth, and the head falls forward due to lack of support, which leads to poor posture and increased energy expenditure.

I am so excited to be taking this course and expand my knowledge of TMD. Better known as Temporomandibular Mandibular Dysfunction. I can’t wait to bring this information to my myofunctional practices and better help people with their TMJ problems.

Why Should Healthcare Professionals Learn About TMD?

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) doesn’t just affect the jaw—it influences oral posture, muscle balance, airway health, and overall orofacial function.

For those incorporating Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) into their practice, understanding TMD is essential for providing a more comprehensive and collaborative approach to patient care.

✅ Recognize the Impact on Orofacial Function: TMD can contribute to muscle tension, altered oral posture, and compensatory movement patterns that affect orofacial balance.

✅ Support Optimal Jaw Mobility and Stability: Identifying TMD-related issues can help guide appropriate interventions to improve muscle coordination and jaw function.

✅ Identify Links to Airway and Sleep Disorders: TMD often coexists with conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), highlighting the need for integrative care.

✅ Collaborate for Better Patient Outcomes: Understanding TMD allows healthcare professionals to work effectively with dentists, physical therapists, and other specialists to ensure holistic patient care.

💡 Our Course: TMD Considerations in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy equips you with the knowledge to recognize, assess, and support patients with TMD-related concerns. Learn how to apply evidence-based insights and collaborate with other providers to optimize outcomes.

Mouth breathing is a common issue that can lead to various health problems, including sleep disturbances, dental issues, and even facial development concerns. Myofunctional therapy is a treatment approach that addresses these problems by retraining the muscles of the face and mouth to function properly.

This therapy involves exercises that target the tongue, lips, and facial muscles to encourage nasal breathing and improve proper oral resting posture. By focusing on proper tongue placement and breathing techniques, myofunctional therapy can help alleviate the negative impacts of mouth breathing.

The benefits of myofunctional therapy extend beyond just correcting mouth breathing. It can improve sleep quality and contribute to better oral health. This therapy is often used in conjunction with other treatments, such as orthodontic work, to ensure comprehensive care.

Individuals of all ages can benefit from myofunctional therapy, and it is a non-invasive option that promotes long-term health improvements. By addressing the root causes of mouth breathing, myofunctional therapy offers a holistic approach to improving overall well-being.
