Celebrating Clinical Success : James Rhea
Mr. James Rhea, a 94-year-old Assisted Living resident, was hospitalized for acute respiratory failure with hypoxia, a possible pulmonary embolism, and questionable congestive heart failure. He came to us needing assistance from all therapy modalities, with a primary focus on respiratory weaning.
With the strong encouragement and support of his family, Mr. Rhea began his rehab recovery journey. When he was in the hospital, he required 15 liters of supplemental oxygen. Upon admission to our care, his goal was to continue oxygen weaning, and he started at 6 liters of oxygen via nasal cannula.
From the outset, the resident, his family, rehab team, and respiratory therapists worked diligently to wean him off oxygen. The goal was to help him regain as much independence as possible so he could return to his assisted living apartment. Respiratory therapy and all therapy departments monitored and adjusted his oxygen levels daily, as tolerated. Respiratory therapy also coached him in deep breathing exercises, pursed-lip breathing, and the use of an incentive spirometer to improve his breathing during activity.
Thanks to the combined efforts of everyone at ACLC and the incredible support system around Mr. Rhea, he was successfully weaned from 15 liters to 6 liters, and eventually to just 2 liters of oxygen as needed. He expressed feeling as good as, or even better than, before, thanks to the comprehensive support and care he received during his time with us.
Following his discharge, respiratory therapy followed up with Mr. Rhea in the Assisted Living part of the campus. Working with the Social Worker, Assisted Living nursing staff, and his family, we ensured a smooth transition back to his home environment. Mr. Rhea was thrilled to return to his routine and friends. He now has an oxygen concentrator for occasional use and has been educated by our staff on how to monitor his oxygen levels, practice deep breathing when short of breath, and safely use oxygen in his apartment.
Both Mr. Rhea and his family are overjoyed with the progress he has made, which has allowed him to reclaim his life and independence. He is now equipped with the knowledge to focus on his health and wellness.
Congratulations, Mr. Rhea! We are incredibly proud of your hard work and wish you continued health and happiness.
