The ENIAC Programmers -- A group of 6 women who were tasked with programming the first digital computer.
In the early to mid 1940s the US Army began a project which would turn out to be the first programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer. The ENIAC (The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was used for computing values for artillery range tables and was also used in calculations for nuclear fusion.
The computer was kept under wraps until it was unveiled in 1946 after the end of WWII. The designers of the machine, John Mauchley and J. Presper Eckert rose to fame for both design and function. It wasn’t until five decades later that the ENIAC women were credited for their role in the success of the project.
These incredible women are:
Kay McNulty
Betty Jennings
Betty Snyder
Marlyn Wescoff
Fran Bilas
Ruth Lichterman

Thanks to research conducted by computer scientist Kathy Kleiman, we can all know the story of the brilliant women who were instrumental in the creation of the world’s first general-purpose digital computer.
