Meet Julie Byrd
What began as a student completing clinicals has grown into a remarkable career spanning more than 25 years. Today, Julie serves as Director of Nursing for SOFHA’s Pediatric division, bringing both clinical expertise and heartfelt leadership to the teams and families she supports.
On how her career evolved:
“My journey with SOFHA started in 1998 while completing my clinicals for my CMA certification at Johnson City Pediatrics. I was fortunate to be hired after earning my certification and spent 16 years in that role before deciding to further my education and become a Registered Nurse. After gaining additional experience, I returned to SOFHA in 2018 in a new role within HR as a Safety Specialist, focusing on team member health and safety. When COVID hit, my role shifted significantly, but ultimately my heart led me back to Pediatrics. In 2021, I stepped into my current role as Director of Nursing. It truly felt like coming home.”
Key moments along the way:
“I feel incredibly blessed to have climbed the ladder throughout my career. From years at the bedside to my time in HR, each experience expanded my knowledge in both clinical and administrative areas. I have learned so much from the people around me and continue to grow every day. Healthcare is always evolving, and while experience is valuable, being open to change is just as important.”
What she enjoys most today:
“I love being able to see the full scope of nursing while still working bedside. One of the most rewarding parts is seeing patients I once cared for as children now bringing in their own children. It may make me feel a little older, but it is such a privilege to walk alongside families through different stages of their lives.”
Advice for new team members:
“It is a privilege that families trust us with their care and the care of their loved ones. Show up each day ready to give your best and treat every patient like family. And most importantly, never stop learning.”
Julie’s story is a powerful reminder that passion, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning can lead to a deeply meaningful and impactful career.
