🧩 Did You Know? 🧠
Your child’s ability to focus, learn, and communicate starts from the ground up, beginning with the central nervous system and sensory systems!

At the base of what’s called the Pyramid of Learning, we find the sensory systems (touch, movement, body awareness, vision, hearing, taste, and smell). These systems feed the brain with information that helps children understand and respond to the world around them.

When this foundation is strong, children can build on higher-level skills like:

✨ Sensory Motor Development (balance, coordination, posture)
✨ Perceptual Motor Development (eye-hand coordination, motor planning)
✨ Cognitive and Intellectual Skills (attention, problem solving, academics)

But when the sensory foundation is shaky, it can make everything above harder, like trying to build a house on sand.

💡 That’s why in OT and Speech; we often start by supporting the sensory and body foundation first. When the body is regulated and organized, the brain is ready to learn, think, and grow!

💡 Parents, Do You Understand Your Insurance Deductible? 🤔

When it comes to insurance, your deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance pays for your child’s treatment.

🔹 What is a Deductible?
A deductible is the amount you have to pay out of pocket for services before your insurance starts covering costs. Think of it like a spending threshold. If your deductible is $500, you need to pay that amount first for covered services before the insurance begins paying its share. After you reach the deductible, insurance will start covering a portion or all of the costs, depending on the plan.

🔹Need an Example?
Let’s say your child has therapy sessions that cost $100 each, and your deductible is $500. You will need to pay for the first five sessions yourself. After that, insurance will start covering a portion of the costs, depending on your plan.

💡 Did You Know? Secondary Insurance Doesn’t Cover Your Primary Insurance Deductible! 🤔

🔹 What is Primary Insurance?
Your primary insurance is the first insurance that kicks in when you have a claim. It’s responsible for covering most of the cost, but you’ll still need to pay your deductible before they help.

🔹 What is Secondary Insurance?
Your secondary insurance steps in after your primary insurance has paid. It can help cover additional costs like co-pays or coinsurance, but it does NOT pay your primary insurance deductible.

🔹 Why Doesn’t Secondary Insurance Cover the Deductible?
Secondary insurance is meant to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs after your primary insurance has paid its share. The deductible is considered part of your out-of-pocket responsibility, and it’s not something your secondary policy picks up.

🔹 What Does This Mean for You?
It’s important to know that you’ll still need to meet your primary deductible first before secondary insurance starts covering additional expenses.

🔹 Pro Tip:
Make sure you’re prepared to pay your primary insurance deductible and plan accordingly to avoid any surprises! Keep in mind, everyone has a DIFFERENT plan.

🌈 Fun Meets Food in OT! 🥕🍓

In occupational therapy, we believe food should be fun, not stressful! 💪 Through play, exploration, and sensory experiences, kids build confidence and curiosity around new foods — one giggle, squish, and sniff at a time!

Whether we’re painting with yogurt, digging for “buried carrots,” or making silly snack faces, every moment supports comfort, creativity, and growth. 🌟

Because sometimes the best progress happens when we’re just having FUN! 💚

✨Time to learn, time to play!✨
What better way to build communication than by using an AAC device during a favorite activity? 💬🎨🧩

When we follow a child’s lead and tap into their interests, we’re not just keeping them engaged—we’re building real connections 💛

💡 OT + SLP tip: Pair fine motor tasks with AAC modeling! Whether it’s pushing cars, squishing playdough, or dressing a favorite doll, there’s always a chance to model words and spark communication.

📱 + 👐 = 💬 + 💫
Because magic happens when play meets purpose.

Great information from The Well Balanced OT! Do you know what you are looking for in a neurodiversity-affirming therapist?

A neurodiversity-affirming therapist is a mental health professional who embraces the neurodiversity paradigm. This approach recognizes and respects neurological differences, such as those associated with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodevelopmental conditions, as natural variations of human cognition rather than as deficits or disorders to be “fixed.”

Key Characteristics of Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapists:

Strengths-Based Approach: They focus on the individual’s strengths and unique capabilities rather than solely addressing perceived weaknesses or challenges.

Respect for Identity: They respect and validate neurodiverse identities, avoiding practices that promote conformity to neurotypical norms.

Trauma-Informed Care: Understanding that many neurodiverse individuals have experienced stigma or marginalization, they create safe, supportive environments.

Collaboration: They work collaboratively with clients, empowering them to define goals that align with their values and needs.

Avoiding Harmful Practices: They avoid therapies or interventions that aim to suppress or eliminate natural behaviors.
