We are proud to announce that registered nurse Ashley Szewczyk is the recipient of our first-ever DAISY Award. The DAISY Award is a national recognition program that honors extraordinary nurses for their care, compassion, kindness and humanity. Nominations come from coworkers, patients and families and are reviewed anonymously by the DAISY committee before selecting one recipient.

Ashley was nominated by a former patient, which makes this award especially meaningful. Thank you, Ashley, for your hard work and dedication. You have proven to be an extraordinary nurse, and we are so proud of you. Wear your DAISY pin with pride as a reminder that even on the toughest days, you are resilient and provide excellent care to our patients.

It’s the holiday season, and what better way to celebrate than by giving back.

For the second year in a row, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Johnston participated in “Elves for Elders,” a program that brings holiday joy to seniors living in facilities across the state. With the stars taken from our tree and the lobby overflowing with gifts, we’re proud to support older adults in our community who might not otherwise receive a present this season.

We’re delighted to continue this tradition and so proud of our staff for embracing such a meaningful program.

Kayla suffered a devastating stroke that left her unable to move her right side and struggling with speech. When she arrived at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Johnston, Kayla needed two staff members just to transfer and was fully dependent for self-care. With determination, hard work and daily physical, occupational and speech therapy, Kayla set her sights on returning home to her family and back to her career as a medical assistant. Her positive spirit lit up the hospital every single day.

Today, Kayla is completely independent! During her discharge celebration, she waved goodbye with her right hand — a powerful symbol of her strength and perseverance.

Congratulations, Kayla! You showed us all what courage and determination can achieve. We are cheering you on as you begin this next chapter!

After a life-altering fall, Lori came to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Johnston to begin her rehabilitation journey. She worked hard every day with her physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists, as well as her nurses, to get back to where she needed to be.

When Lori arrived, she required moderate assistance for walking, transferring and getting out of bed. Through determination, the unwavering support of her loving husband and the dedication of her care team, Lori now needs only supervision for walking and transfers.

It was a long journey, but Lori left our hospital stronger, more independent and surrounded by people who believe in her. Thank you, Lori, for trusting us with your care. We wish you all the best in your continued recovery.

We had a successful food drive for Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, an organization that empowers veterans by providing support services. Rachel, one of our speech therapists, delivered the donations and had the opportunity to speak with some of the employees there.

We are proud of our team for giving back to those in need, especially during the holiday season when circumstances are not the same for everyone.

After a car accident left Stephen with a spinal cord injury, he was admitted to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Johnston. Upon arrival, he was completely dependent on others for self-care, including eating, and had no movement in his arms. Any movement in his legs was extremely uncoordinated.

Through three hours of therapy each day, Stephen made incredible progress. He is now independent with daily living tasks, can walk 150 feet with a rolling walker and even climb a flight of stairs. Stephen challenged himself every step of the way with the support of Lori, his physical therapist, and Alissa, his occupational therapist.

We are so proud of your hard work, Stephen! Thank you for trusting us with your care.

It’s not every day we get to welcome back a former patient, but Dan’s visit was truly special.

Dan was admitted to Encompass Health Johnston in February after a serious fall that resulted in a spinal cord injury and required two surgeries. When he arrived, Dan was completely dependent — unable to transfer, unable to feed himself and needed a Hoyer lift with two clinical staff members just to get out of bed. After 40 days of intensive therapy with Lori and Alissa, Dan was discharged home with in-home occupational therapy and physical therapy, then transitioned to outpatient care.

Fast forward to today: Dan is walking, swimming, and using a walker to get around. His Sara-Stedy is now a drying rack, and the slide boards are collecting dust — a true testament to his hard work, determination and commitment to recovery.

Dan surprised everyone when he walked through our doors, a completely changed man. His progress is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

Erin, our chief nursing officer, and Justine, our director of therapy operations, had a blast at the National Director of Therapy Operations and Chief Nursing Officer Meeting in Chicago! This event brought together CNOs and DTOs from across Encompass Health to collaborate on best practices, strengthen partnerships within clinical teams and deepen their understanding of each other’s roles.

We’re proud to see our leaders representing our hospital and contributing to meaningful conversations that enhance patient care.
