Very proud of the team and their undertaking in making quality care more accessible to the Johnstown community. Without this initiative, patients would be waiting in excess of 4-6 months to have their joint replaced locally.

Most importantly, the quality measures at Conemaugh remain amongst the nations’ best. Conemaugh Orthopedics was just recognized as the Duke Life Point leader in joint replacement quality across the 36 state-wide health system. This is calculated with standardized ERAS scores which allows for the ranking and comparisons of hospitals.

Overall, joint replacements can be performed at Conemaugh - a national quality leader and with less of a wait.

The Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center Orthopedic team has completed its first high-volume arthroplasty day, performing multiple total joint replacements, including complex revision surgeries, in just one day.

The success of this initiative is the culmination of months of meticulous planning and cross-departmental coordination involving nursing, pre-op and recovery (PACU), physical therapy, anesthesia, operating room staff, sterile processing, Team Stryker, and Western PA Orthopedics.

Achilles Tendon ruptures usually occur in the middle age. When neither the tendon (or the patient) is athletic as they once were). There is debate about whether an open or minimally invasive repair is better. This patient chose an open repair because of its initial stronger fixation. (When you make an open incision you can see better and place the sutures more precise).

The picture on the left is the ruptured Achilles tendon. The picture on the right is after the repair.

Surgery is outpatient (go home the same day) and usually takes between 30-45 mins. Recovery generally takes about 3 months.

Fantastic outcome following fixation of a very bad open fracture from a snowboarding accident. The approach to access to this fracture is unique. The olecranon (the pointy aspect on the back of the elbow) must be cut with a saw and folded back with the triceps for full exposure. It is repaired with a plate and screws after the fracture is fixed with the same.

The blue vessel loop is around the ulnar nerve (funny bone nerve) which needs to be identified and protected during the case.

Conemaugh’s first proximal humerus replacement (mega-prosthesis) following a tumor resection.

The tumor was eroding the head of the humerus and resulted in a fracture and pain. A normal reverse shoulder replacement is not long enough as some of the humeral shaft required removal because of tumor extension. This patient was treated with a mega-prosthesis giving them a painless functional arm.

Thankful today for the people that make Western PA Orthopedics an unparalleled team. Patients have great outcomes because of the expert and compassionate behind the scenes care that these individuals provide. There are many more people that comprise the team that I would love to acknowledge, but unfortunately I do not have many pictures.

Louie - You are the most valuable player on the Western PA Ortho team!
BethAnn - You are team owner, president, and CEO!
I am especially thankful for the support and friendship that you two provide on a daily basis.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Surgical complications sometimes happen. When they do, the Conemaugh trauma team is here to work through them.

This patient had a left hip fracture fixed about a year ago. They fell again and the nail loosened, It went through bone, and into the pelvis. The threads of the screw were directly against an artery and the ureter (vessel that takes urine from the kidney to the bladder). Because of compression on the ureter from the screw, the patient was going into kidney failure. The screw simply couldn’t be backed out with a screwdriver because the sharp threads would cut the artery and ureter.

The final result was the successful removal of the nail/screw and placement of a hemiarthroplasty (half hip replacement). The team effort involved Conemaugh Trauma, Orthopedics, Vascular Surgery, and Urology. Blessed to serve the region alongside a multitude of other specialists at Conemaugh.

Before and After - 5th metatarsal ORIF.

Take notice of the preop lateral (side view). This fracture would not have healed well on its own. The fracture fragments were angled downward into the sole of the foot.
