Most of us know someone who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, whether it’s touched our own family or a friend’s loved ones. Nationally, November is known as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.

Although everyone experiences a change in brain function as they age, what occurs with Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, which means it gets worse over time, and the person affected eventually loses the ability to accomplish daily tasks.

Whether it’s during November or any other time of the year, understanding Alzheimer’s disease can improve the quality of life for those with previously undiagnosed Alzheimer’s.

To familiarize yourself with the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's visit www.alz.org. If you notice these in yourself or someone you know, don't ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. It is a day to show support for all the caretakers who devote their time and energy to those with life-limiting illnesses. Jobs like these are often a calling and having the support of people who care helps them do their job better. We appreciate the care that these workers provide to our communities and the comfort that they bring to patients and their families.

We are excited to share with you one of our recent rehabilitation success stories! Meet Mrs. Shirley Oprondek who worked with our awesome therapy team at River Crossing of Joliet towards increased independence and functional goals. We are proud to share her story and her success!

Mrs. Shirley Oprondek came to River Crossing of Joliet for Rehab Services following surgery on her right knee due to arthritis. When Mrs. Oprondek arrived at our facility, she required extensive assistance with bed mobility, lower self-care, showers and transfers. She was unable to walk or climb the stairs. Shirley presented with decreased strength in both legs and increased pain in her right knee resulting in impairment of ambulation, unsteady balance, decreased tolerance to standing activities and lack of coordination. After undergoing intensive therapy with our passionate rehab team at River Crossing of Joliet, Mrs. Oprondek is now able to perform all transfers independently, and is able to walk over 250 feet. Shirley is able to dress herself and complete lower body self-care tasks, as well as shower independently. Due to her improved strength and coordination, the therapy staff assessed Mrs. Oprondek's ability to complete stair activities. Currently, she is able to climb 17 stairs without any pain. Even though the journey was tough, and appeared endless, Shirley remained determined to achieve her goals of returning home. With the help of our amazing rehab team, Mrs. Oprondek will return to her own residence with her spouse. We are so proud of Mrs. Oprondek and all her success!
