At Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, we are committed to providing compassionate, inclusive care, including access to language services and patient support. For some volunteers, that environment also inspires a deeper personal calling and a desire to further strengthen patient connection.

For Tamaya M., what began as high school volunteer hours quickly became a defining experience that helped shape her future in medicine.

“Working with patients who didn’t have family or friends to advocate for them during a vulnerable time as well as Spanish-speaking patients with mostly English-speaking staff made me aware of the major disparities in patient experience and health care access. My experience here made me more committed to serving diverse and marginalized communities and working to bridge the gap between patients and medical staff.”

Inspired by those experiences, Tamaya chose to take that responsibility even further through her own growth and education.

“The meaningful conversations that I had with the hospital staff and some of the patients not only solidified my career aspirations of working in medicine but also pushed me to become fluent in Spanish so that I am able to really connect with my future patients.”

Did you know that someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds? A single blood donation can help save up to three lives, supporting patients who rely on transfusions for surgeries, cancer treatment, trauma care, and chronic illnesses.

January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to recognize the generosity of blood donors and raise awareness about the ongoing need for donations, especially during the winter months when supplies often decline. By donating blood, individuals help ensure hospitals have the lifesaving resources needed to care for patients and families when it matters most.

Thank you to all who give the gift of life and make a lasting impact in their communities.
