🧠💚✨ Mental Health Awareness Month: A Clinical Overview
Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each May, with origins dating back to 1949 when Mental Health America first introduced the initiative to increase public understanding 📖 and reduce stigma 🚫.
At that time, mental health conditions were rarely discussed openly, and individuals experiencing psychological distress were often misunderstood ❗ minimized, or excluded.
Over time, this movement has expanded to include:
📚 Psychoeducation on symptoms and evidence-based treatment
⚖️ Advocacy for access to mental health care
🧩 Emphasis on early identification and intervention
Despite increased awareness 📈, stigma and barriers to care still exist.
Mental health conditions are clinical conditions—not personal failures.
Effective, evidence-based treatments are available ✔️💡
Mental Health Awareness Month continues to serve as an opportunity to:
🗣️ Normalize conversations about mental health
🤝 Encourage individuals to seek licensed, ethical care
🧠 Promote clinically sound, trauma-informed treatment
If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to a licensed mental health professional is an appropriate and evidence-based step toward support 💚✨
If you are interested in scheduling an appointment 🗓️, please visit my website 🌐 and send a message through the contact form 💻📩
I respond quickly ⚡ and will follow up with you as soon as possible 🤍

I’ve had several therapists I don’t even know slide into my inbox asking about subleasing my office space 👀📩
While I do share the overall space with another small group practice, my side is intentionally a solo setup. The extra offices are not up for sublease—I’m just a lone wolf over here 🐺🚫
I structure my space this way on purpose so that when my patients come in, they don’t have to worry about running into others and can feel a greater sense of privacy and safety 🤍
Wishing you all the best in finding the perfect space for your practice ✨🏢

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month 💙

Sexual violence is more common than most people realize, and it impacts individuals across all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

Some important statistics 📊:
• 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced completed or attempted r**e
• 1 in 71 men have experienced r**e
• Nearly 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience sexual abuse during childhood
• The majority of perpetrators are known to the victim
• Sexual violence is significantly underreported

These are not just numbers. These are real people who often carry the effects of trauma long after the event itself.

In my work, I frequently see the long-term impact of sexual trauma, including symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and difficulty with trust and relationships. Many survivors were not believed, were minimized, or were never given the space to process what happened to them.

Awareness is not just about acknowledging that sexual violence exists. It is about understanding its impact, challenging harmful beliefs, and responding appropriately when someone discloses 🧠

If you are a survivor, your experience is valid 💙

✨ National Social Work Month ✨
Honoring the Profession of Social Work 🤍

Social work is a profession rooted in over a century of advocacy, reform, and ethical responsibility. Leaders like Jane Addams, who co-founded Hull House in 1889, helped lay the foundation for modern social work. 🏛️

Today, social work is a regulated profession governed by state licensing laws to protect the public.

I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in 2010 🎓 and earned my Master’s degree in late 2016. A few months later, I passed my licensure exam.

But here’s something important:

I did not call myself a social worker — publicly or professionally — until I was licensed.

In Arkansas, the title “social worker” is legally protected under state law. You cannot represent yourself to the public as a social worker unless you hold the appropriate license (LSW, LMSW, or LCSW).

That mattered to me.

Licensure protects the public. 🛡️
It ensures education, supervision, and examination standards are met. 📚
It safeguards the people we serve. 🤝

Human Services Roles (No Social Work License Required)

There are many valuable positions serving families and communities that do not require a social work license, such as:

• Child Protective Services Worker
• Family Service Worker
• Case Manager
• Community Services Staff
• Behavioral Health Support Staff

These roles are essential — but they are not licensed social work practice.

Social Work Licensure Levels in Arkansas

🟢 LSW (Licensed Social Worker)
Requires a Bachelor of Social Work + passing the bachelor-level exam.
Primarily non-clinical or supportive practice.

🔵 LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker)
Requires a Master of Social Work + passing the master-level exam.

In Arkansas, LMSWs may:
• Provide psychotherapy
• Diagnose mental health disorders
• Conduct clinical assessments

They must practice under supervision and cannot operate an independent private practice.

🟣 LCSW (Licensed Certified Social Worker – Arkansas)

To qualify in Arkansas, you must complete:
✔ 4,000 hours of post-graduate supervised clinical practice
✔ A minimum of 2 years of supervised experience
✔ 100 hours of supervision
✔ Board approval
✔ Passing the Association of Social Work Boards Clinical Examination
✔ Ongoing continuing education

An LCSW may:
• Practice independently
• Open a private practice
• Bill insurance independently
• Accept private insurance
• Provide clinical supervision
• Offer telehealth in approved states

Social work is not just a degree.
It is regulated.
It is supervised.
It is examined.
It is ethical.

This month, I’m proud to celebrate the integrity, responsibility, and accountability of our profession. 💛

Following a demanding week, Gretchen and I are taking a well-deserved break today. We made a trip to her preferred pharmacy to collect medication, where she received two milk bones as a treat. We then went to Walmart to purchase groceries and subsequently to Chick-fil-A, where she delighted in a pup cup and five grilled chicken nuggets. It's the small things.
