What a pleasure it was to have local author, Missy Stahr Threadgill visit the residents of The Bungalows at Jonesboro yesterday. She came to talk about her new book entitled “Clayton”. Missy has been a volunteer at Mission Outreach of NEA, located in Paragould, for the past 11 years. During this time, she became acquainted with and developed a friendship with one of the residents who came regularly to eat his meals there. This man’s name was Clayton. He could not live at the home because he was an alcoholic and neither they nor drug addicts can live there. When Missy and her husband met Clayton, he was living in an abandoned house without electricity or running water. She grew close to him, and he subsequently shared his life story with her, from birth to death. She wanted to share Clayton’s story with others so that they too can understand some of the reasons people end up homeless. It can be said that many people in the United States may be only one paycheck away from homelessness. There are many reasons why a person may become homeless. Some reasons are unemployment, financial hardship, battered and abused women and children, and lack of a supportive, nurturing family unit. Mission Outreach provides food, clothing, and housing for residents until they can get financially stable again. Some of the goals are to help them find a job, buy a car, and receive counseling.
At Mission Outreach, Missy is called the “party lady” because she provides a birthday party for each resident. She also hosts parties during several holidays. She says that she wants to provide these opportunities for those living there because they can feel “normal” for a day. For these reasons, The Bungalows has chosen this worthwhile ministry to be their monthly Pay It Forward project. To follow is a list of items that we are collecting to provide for the needs of the residents. We appreciate any help that you can give.
