Understanding your testing options helps you get the most out of your diagnostics. 👩‍🔬

🔹 PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) detects the pathogen’s DNA or RNA in the sample collected – helping determine whether an active infection is present.
🔹 ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) detects antibodies — showing whether the animal has been exposed to the disease in the past.
🔹 Lateral Flow Rapid Tests (On-Farm Chute-Side Tests) detects pregnancy right on the farm for cattle, goat, and sheep without specialized equipment – perfect for fast pregnancy decisions and on-site herd management.

In short:
• PCR = Detects the pathogen’s genetic material in the sample
• ELISA = Detects exposure history
• Rapid Tests = Provide quick results for on-farm decisions

Using these testing options together gives a complete picture of herd health, helping you make faster, more informed management decisions. 🌾🧬

Neospora Caninum is one of the leading causes of abortion and reproductive failure in cattle. 🐄 Because it often shows no outward signs, testing is essential to detect exposure and prevent transmission.

Why it matters:
🔹 Infected cows can pass the parasite to calves during pregnancy.
🔹 The disease can remain in herds undetected for years.
🔹 Identifying positive animals helps producers make better breeding and management decisions.

Since dogs are one of the main carriers of the parasite, keeping dogs away from calving areas is important for prevention.

Regular screening helps reduce reproductive losses and protect your operation’s bottom line. 💛

Anaplasmosis is a blood-borne disease that can quietly spread through a herd, leading to severe anemia, decreased production, and even death in adult cattle. 🩸 Early detection is key.

Testing helps:
🔹 Identify infected carriers that show no symptoms
🔹 Prevent transmission through insects, needles, or instruments
🔹 Protect your herd’s health during stress events (like transport or calving)

Our ELISA test helps detect exposure to anaplasmosis and identify carrier animals before problems arise. You can submit just one tube of blood to test for anaplasmosis and other important herd diseases like Johne’s at the same time.

Keeping this disease under control starts with accurate diagnostics and consistent monitoring.

BVDV (Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus) is one of the most costly and widespread cattle diseases. 🧪

The BVDV Antigen (Ag) test identifies persistently infected (PI) animals — cattle that continuously shed the virus, spreading infection within the herd.

Why it matters:
🔹 PI animals often look healthy but cause reproductive loss, calf sickness, and reduced performance.
🔹 Identifying and removing PI animals helps protect the entire herd.
Routine screening for BVDV Ag is a simple, proactive step toward long-term herd health and biosecurity. 🐄💪

💡 Tip: Test all new additions before introducing them to the herd. Testing can be performed on either blood samples or ear notches.

🚨 Important Update: Promotions Ending & New Set-Up Fee Starting Nov. 3

With the growth of our testing menu, we’ve seen more single-sample submissions that require significant set-up time. To keep turnaround times efficient, a set-up fee will apply to certain less common or newer tests starting November 3.

✅ Tests with set-up fees beginning Nov. 3:
• Poultry, swine, and companion animal tests
• Select cattle tests: BLV, BVDV Ag, Neospora, Anaplasma, Cattle Biosecurity Panel, Johne’s PCR, BVDV PCR
• Goat/Sheep molecular PCR: Johne’s PCR, CAEV/OPP PCR, CL PCR

❌ What’s not changing:
• Our core diagnostic tests remain the same reliable pricing you know and trust:
• Goat/Sheep blood (Johne’s, CL, CAE/OPP, biosecurity panels)
• Pregnancy tests
• Cattle pregnancy & Johne’s blood (serological)

📦 Grace period for customers:
We’ll honor promotional pricing and waived set-up fees for any samples shipped on or before November 2 (based on FedEx/UPS ship date).

👉 Sending multiple samples together continues to be the most cost-effective option. For larger submissions, set-up fees may be reduced or waived on a case-by-case basis — just reach out to our team to discuss.

Healthy herds start with informed testing. 🐄

Understanding your herd’s health status is essential for preventing disease, protecting reproduction, and maintaining performance. Routine diagnostic screening can identify infections early — often before clinical signs appear.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll highlight key tests every producer should know:
• Quick guide to PCR vs. ELISA vs. Chute Side testing
• BVDV Ag (Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Antigen)
• Anaplasmosis
• Neospora

Follow along to learn how each test supports healthier, more productive cattle and smarter herd management decisions. 🌾👩‍🔬

📦 Shipping Samples to Delta Livestock Diagnostics? 🐄🐑🐖

Proper packaging ensures safe delivery and accurate results. Follow these guidelines:

- Label each sample with the animal ID (name or ear tag number).
- Use leakproof containers (e.g., red/yellow top tubes or screw-cap tubes).
- Wrap samples in absorbent material (e.g., paper towel) and place in a leakproof zip-seal bag.
- Include a waterproof bag with the submission form, ensuring contact details are provided.
- Pack in sturdy outer packaging (cardboard box for pregnancy samples; insulated cooler for biosecurity samples) with ice packs (not frozen water bags). Use paper towels or bubble wrap to separate the ice packs from the samples to prevent direct contact.
- Mark the outer package as “Exempt Animal Specimen” and ensure it withstands a 4-foot drop test.

⚠️ Important: Do not send samples in syringes with needles attached, gloves, OB sleeves, or leaky containers.

👉 These guidelines focus on blood samples. For other sample types (e.g., f***l, swabs), packaging instructions are available in our Sample Shipping Guide: https://loom.ly/lgwCrew.
